The Best Films From Cannes 2026NEON
(NEON)
The statement you would hear the loudest at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival was the fact that it was a relatively quiet year. Sure, some movies inspired old-fashioned bidding wars (like Jordan Firstman’sClub Kid, which eventually went to A24), and international superstars like Isabelle Huppert, Demi Moore, and Javier Bardem blindingly decorated the red carpet of the Palais steps on the Croisette. But this edition of Cannes was still one that was hampered by a so-so competition lineup—usually the festival’s most hotly anticipated segment—and a cinematic vibe of generally underwhelmed attendees.
Still, you get to choose your own adventure every time you attend a film festival, and Cannes is no exception. And it isn’t necessarily a challenge to find some truly great movies—some poised to become new classics—if you dig into the offerings inquisitively enough with tireless time commitment. Among more than 40 titles I have screened across the festival’s official selection and sidebars, here are 12 films (many of them future awards contenders) that you should look forward to.
