Ophelia has drowned many times in art and literature. But this time, Taylor Swift pulls her out of the water.
On Sunday, Swift unveiled the music video for ‘The Fate of Ophelia’, the lead single from her new album ‘The Life of a Showgirl’. But this isn’t just another release. It’s Swift rewriting centuries-old tragedy into a story of survival, glamour, and reinvention.

The video, which Swift directed herself, begins exactly where Sir John Everett Millais’s famous painting leaves off: Ophelia floating helplessly in the river. Only, Swift refuses to let her sink. From there, the film becomes a kaleidoscope of identities, with the singer transforming from Shakespeare’s doomed heroine into a Hollywood bombshell, a 1960s girl-group star, and finally, her dazzling “showgirl” persona of today.

To capture this ambitious vision, Swift once again teamed up with Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto. He has earned popularity for his works on ‘Barbie’, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, and ‘Brokeback Mountain’.
Prieto’s lens, paired with Swift’s storytelling instincts, makes the video feel like a time machine. It glides smoothly across eras with absolute lush colors. There are cinematic lightings, and deliberate nods to cultural icons like Marilyn Monroe and Ronnie Spector.

The closing image with Swift in a bathtub is exhausted yet alive. It feels symbolic. Instead of surrendering to tragedy, her Ophelia survives. That very scene now serves as the cover for ‘The Life of a Showgirl’.
The music video was first screened on Friday during ‘Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl’. Fans were treated to behind-the-scenes clips, Swift’s commentary on all twelve tracks of the album, and lyric videos for every song.
The excitement has translated into staggering numbers. On its first day alone, ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ sold 2.7 million copies across formats. This is Swift’s biggest opening to date and one of the largest first-week sales in the music industry since 1991.
