Fans of spooky movies like to think they are hard to scare, but that’s not always true: if you want to see most of them jump high in the air, you just have to whisper the words “horror remake” in their ear. Horror fiends know that most remakes of their favorite films are infinitely worse than the original, but there are still a few exceptions worth checking out. On Hulu, for instance, you can now stream the 2013 Evil Dead, which is arguably the greatest horror remake ever made.
If this is your first time watching Evil Dead (2013), you should know that it was directed by Fede Álvarez as his feature film debut. The financial success of this film helped establish him as a big name in Hollywood, and most recently, he directed Alien: Romulus, another wildly successful horror film in yet another popular franchise. For my money, Álvarez is one of the most reliable directors for breathing life back into stale franchises, and that’s on full display in Evil Dead.
The plot of Evil Dead involves a group of friends hanging out in a spooky cabin in the woods, intending to help their friend kick her heroin habit. Eventually, one of them finds a creepy old book and makes the mistake of reading from it out loud. This unleashes a mysterious evil force, and unless these friends can find a way to either fight these horrors or escape, they are doomed to die in increasingly brutal ways.
The cast of smaller names does a great job, including Jane Levy (who has a voice role in the new Toxic Avenger movie) as our leading lady. Evil Dead also stars Shiloh Fernandez, who has a role in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming Greek epic film The Odyssey. It also stars Jessica Lucas, who eventually created a solid career on the small screen with main roles in Gotham and The Resident.
Beyond the confident direction and killer performances, what I loved most about this Evil Dead remake is that it expertly weaves the original source material into an otherwise original movie. That makes it different from other horror remakes like the 2003 Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot, which mostly functioned as a modern update of a classic horror film. While I love Chainsaw (one of the best horror remakes ever), Evil Dead is arguably more entertaining for its ability to surprise fans who might know what’s coming.
And trust me: you won’t see any of the crazy twists in the film coming, ranging from its startling deaths to its blood-drenched climax. Critics generally enjoyed these twists, and the movie currently has a critical score of 64 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. This is notable because professional critics are usually hard on the horror genre, but Evil Dead has enough stylish direction, engaging writing, and screamworthy performances to be “certified fresh.”
Will you find Evil Dead a scary good time when you stream this remake on Hulu, or will this film make you wish you were dead by dawn? The only way to find out is to stream it today. By the time the credits roll, you’ll likely have a better appreciation for a franchise that’s just like its famous Deadites: it keeps coming back to life, right when you think it’s dead.
