One of the most emotional episodes of the All in the Family spinoff, Archie Bunker’s Place, aired 45 years ago today, leaving viewers heartbroken.

It was November 2, 1980, when viewers were stunned by the unthinkable. After eight seasons of watching Archie Bunker (Carroll O’Connor) and his wife Edith (Jean Stapleton) share a loving, if often bumpy, marriage, Edith was revealed to have died.

However, Edith’s fate wasn’t revealed during the final episode of All in the Family. The heartbreaking news came instead during the first season of its spinoff, Archie Bunker’s Place, reported PEOPLE Magazine.

After raising their daughter Gloria (Sally Struthers), watching her marry Mike (Rob Reiner), and welcoming their grandson Joey, Archie and Edith seemed ready to enjoy their golden years together. In the final episode of All in the Family, titled “Too Good Edith”(which aired on April 8, 1979), Archie showed a rare moment of tenderness toward his wife, expressing how much she meant to him.

Archie gave Edith the task of cooking all the food for his big Saint Patrick’s Day bash at his bar, Archie’s Place. In the process, Edith feared telling Archie that she had developed phlebitis and was barely able to stand or walk.

After realizing how ill she was, Archie became remorseful and afraid, pleading with her not to leave him. The moment revealed just how deeply he depended on Edith and marked a turning point as he finally confronted his vulnerability and genuine love for her.

The series then morphed into Archie Bunker’s Place, and to help with the transition, Stapleton agreed to appear in a handful of episodes. Then, Edith was killed by a stroke off-camera.

Archie was left to raise Edith’s young cousin, Stephanie (Danielle Brisebois), but first, viewers watched him grapple with his beloved wife’s death in a scene that deeply moved audiences. The typically tough and stoic Archie broke down over something as simple and heartbreaking as finding a piece of clothing Edith had left behind.

He entered their bedroom and, after closing the dresser drawers, Archie looked under their bed and saw one of Edith’s slippers. He picked it up, looked at it, and said, “It wasn’t supposed to be like this, you know. I was supposed to be the first one to go.”

Archie continued, “You know, I always used to kid you. But you going first, you know I never meant none of that. That morning when you was laying there, I was shaking you, yelling at you to go fix my breakfast. I didn’t know.”

He concluded before sobbing, “You had no right to leave me that way, Edith. Without giving me just one more chance to say I love you.”

Archie Bunker’s Place ran from 1979 through 1983 before television audiences said goodbye to the family for good.
