The most millennial celebrity news story has unfolded over the last week, and it all started when news broke that Vampire Diaries alum Nina Dobrev and Shaun White had called off their engagement. Fast forward a week and Dobrev has posted a red hot TikTok that many are sure is a hint their relationship ended on bad terms, and she also proved she got the friend group in the break up when she was spotted on a yacht with her A-lister friends.
Dobrev and White’s relationship was one of those rare crossovers between Hollywood and the sporting world that from the outside, appeared to be rosy. The actor and three-time Olympic snowboarder first reportedly got together in 2019, and quickly becoming red carpet regulars and mainstays on each other’s Instagram feeds. In October 2024, White proposed in New York with a five-carat Lorraine Schwartz diamond, and the pair seemed to be heading towards their happily ever after.
But September 11 2025, a source close to the couple told People they had ended their engagement after nearly five years, claiming that “it was a mutual decision, and wasn’t an easy one, but it was made with love and a deep respect for one another”. Shortly after, though, fans had already begun to speculate that it might not have been as respectful or mutual as the source claimed.
From public appearances without her engagement ring to Dobrev’s tongue-in-cheek TikTok that had fans speculating that perhaps Shaun had done Dobrev dirty. The TikTok sound asks “what’s your advice for women trying to fix their man?”, and then she does a voiceover that said, “Listen Bob the Builder, he’s got 10 other women trying to fix him too, and you all look like a damn construction crew”. Needless to say, eyebrows raised as the views stacked up on this video, which has now been watched by 25 million people on the platform.
Since the split, Dobrev has been spending time with friends and was spotted over the weekend on a boat with plenty of the couple’s shared celebrity friends. Zac Efron was there (and while some had speculated that it might mean they’re dating, there wasn’t really anything to indicate they’re more than friends), as well as Gossip Girl‘s Chase Crawford, and Miles and Keleigh Teller.
Why Did Nina Dobrev And Shaun White Break Up?
At this stage, it’s all rumours, and it’s likely to stay that way. But the rumours speculate that the pair has actually been on and off for a long time, according to Instagram gossip and blind items page Deuxmoi. “They have been in couples counselling for so long,” they said. “Nina just wanted to build a life and family and he wouldn’t commit.” Though the pair did get engaged last October, White reportedly was lagging on deciding on a wedding date or making any concrete plans.
This was also backed up by People, who a source told that Dobrev was “devastated” over the split. “There was one reason,” the source told People. “She wanted a family and wanted to get married — and he didn’t.”
However, there seems to be a classic warring of sources, with a second insider insisting that both White and Dobrev “wanted marriage and kids” and “it wasn’t just one-sided”. Another friend apparently said: “They both wanted marriage and children and were making plans to have a life together.”

Though the pair were spotted being friendly on a boat over the weekend with friends, there is no concrete evidence to suggest they’re dating.
