“The Pitt” star reveals another character is leaving the ER ahead of season 3: ‘I’m scared and nervous’

Key Points

  • A star of HBO’s The Pitt has revealed that one character will not resume their position in the ER for season 3.

  • The series previously announced the exit of Supriya Ganesh’s Dr. Samira Mohan.

  • This time around, a fan-favorite character will still be on the show — just in a very different capacity.

Get ready for another major staffing change at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center.

Fear not, The Pitt fans, the latest update isn’t nearly as dramatic as the sudden exit of Supriya Ganesh’s Dr. Samira Mohan — but it does involve a fan-favorite character who has been with the show since it first began.

During a recent interview at the Newport Beach TV Fest on June 6, Shabana Azeez — who plays student doctor Victoria Javadi — confirmed to Bustle that she’ll be returning to the show in a slightly different capacity.

“I’m not in the ER this season,” Azeez revealed. “I’ve done my ER rotation, so I’m doing my psychiatry rotation.”

She added, “It’s a very different vibe for me. And I’m scared and nervous. But it’s an honor to be able to show that part of medicine.”

The news isn’t entirely a shock. The second season of The Pitt concluded with Javadi experiencing an epiphany of sorts after looking around the emergency room and realizing what a chaotic state all of her co-workers were in.

“The more time I spend here, the more I realize the importance of mental health — for patients and for us,” she told Dr. Whitaker (Gerran Howell), who replied with a suggestion: “Maybe that’s what you should focus on.”

Javadi later took her burgeoning mental health interest to Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle), who paused his season-long trend of being a less-than-supportive mentor to share a heartfelt moment with her.

“I think that you could do anything that you put your mind to, Victoria,” he replied.

Since the upcoming third season won’t involve another major time-jump, it was unclear whether Javadi would have begun her foray in psychiatric medicine by the time the show resumed. But Azeez has confirmed that when the season picks up in its winter setting, Javadi won’t be resetting bones or snipping superglued eyelashes anymore. She’ll be chasing a new passion in the psychiatry department.

Luckily for viewers, this means Javadi will still appear on the show whenever the emergency department physicians need an assist from the psychiatric department.

As for other changes, news of Ganesh’s departure was announced simultaneously with Ayesha Harris’ promotion to series regular. Harris, whose Dr. Parker Ellis has thus far only graced our screens with the arrival of the night shift, but will be working the day shift when the show resumes for a third season.

While speaking to Entertainment Weekly in April, on the heels of the season 2 finale, series star Noah Wyle hinted at more ER staffing changes to come but didn’t get specific. “There’s a plan in place, but then we take advantage of certain things that come along and write them in, the same way we did with the exit of Dr. Collins,” he explained.

Referencing the exit of Ganesh’s Dr. Mohan, he added, “It seemed like that story had come to a natural end. We hadn’t necessarily planned that when we started, but that’s how it felt when we got to that point. So it’s just a process of really trying to believe in the characters and trust the characters and let them take you to where their stories naturally should play out.”
