Celebrity follows the easiest route possible. Movie premieres or the nearest shopping mall? Tabloids or reality television and social media? Whether physical media or digital formats, celebrities have always gravitated towards being where their audiences can access them quickest and most personally. That access now dictates the future of interactive entertainment. Livestreams, interactive platforms or gamified content are driving this shift. Celebrity is going from being something we watch, to existing within and interacting with the media we consume; often while we control it. By allowing viewers to feel like they are right in the room with celebrities and influencers through livestreaming, they can feel like they’re taking part in those moments.

From broadcast personalities to interactive hosts

As entertainment becomes participatory, the role of celebrity is changing from scripted presence to responsive performance, where improvisation and audience feedback shape the experience itself. Interactive entertainment has carved out a visible place in celebrity culture, particularly through high-production live game show formats that resemble traditional TV game shows. Shows such as Crazy Time, with its spinning wheel, over-the-top hosts and live viewer bonus games, are prime examples of reality television tropes redesigned for social platforms and moments made for virality. We are witnessing the reinvention of TV formulae made familiar through a decade of persistent mediatized formats viewed through the lens of social currency. Celebrities, hosts and producers are creating unscripted moments with the awareness that they will be shared widely and instantaneously. These performances are often unpredictable and highly visible. Celebrity on these terms is repositioned as something that requires continuous effort to maintain visibility.

Your favorite influencer is also a celebrity now

Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and YouTube Shorts have also incentivized this by rewarding users who create hyper-digestible content that evokes strong emotional responses and feels authentic enough to relate to. Anyone can be a celebrity in these moments. Nobody knows what will happen next on live formats, which allows for an element of surprise and spontaneity that fuels interactive participation through reactions, unexpected outcomes and group participation. Adding celebrity into the mix allows viewers to watch content because of who is reacting, rather than the formatted challenge itself. We are no longer just watching influencers; audiences watch to see how influencers react.

Where gaming and celebrity collide

Whether through Twitch livestreaming events, influencers streaming in virtual worlds or celebrities hosting their own events, gaming continues to make appearances in celebrity spaces and vice versa, placing celebrities into environments with built-in systems for deeper content interaction. From interactive concerts being held inside games to influencers hosting tournaments and live competitions, we are seeing celebrity merge into platforms that reach younger audiences and prioritize interactive participation. Celebrities inside games can sometimes carry more social proof than traditional billboard-type advertisements.

Welcome to the new economy

Celebrities can now monetize their presence by allowing fans to tip them while live, subscribe to their channels, integrate branded content and sell virtual goods. This new medium has allowed content creators to amass large followings and recognition without traditional gatekeepers, while also allowing established celebrities to stay relevant between major projects. Users can also receive compensation through certain viewing and engagement models.

Experience over exposure

Celebrities with interactive followings realize visibility is shifting from personality-driven to experience-driven. Fans will always remember the experiences they shared with their favorite celebrity more than another celebrity they watched on television. As technology continues to advance further allowing us to become more immersed in interactive platforms, we will see more cross-pollination between live events, gaming content, and social narratives that allow for a continuous experience of interaction. Celebrities who understand the idea of being seen is no longer enough will embrace this new form of being experienced by their audiences.
