Keith Urban has been professionally touring since 2001. In the past 24 years, he’s learned a thing or two about what it takes to live on the road. Now, he’s sharing that knowledge, plus the nuggets he’s picked up as one of the most successful country acts of all time, with aspiring musicians in the new CBS show, The Road.
On Sunday, October 19, The Road premieres with 12 emerging musicians competing for the chance to be crowned America’s next big country star. The test? They must give it their all as an opening act for Keith himself.
While the show’s premiere is just days away, rules for The Road remain scarce. According to The Daily Mail, Keith revealed that it ultimately boils down to determining who has the calling and who doesn’t. “It’s a calling, and you’re going to do it or you’re not going to make it,” he says. “When you wake up on a tour bus at 3:30 in the morning and you’re sick as a dog, you’re in the middle of nowhere, and you’ve got to play your fifth show later that night.”
How Does The Road Work?
Beyond how they handle the challenges of living on the road, contestants will be evaluated for how well they connect with fans at the mid-size venues they’re performing at. If they perform well, they move on to the next tour stop. If they don’t, they’re presumably booted from the competition.
As for who’s to judge the musicians, Keith will be joined by Blake Shelton, who is an executive producer of the show alongside Yellowstone’s own, Taylor Sheridan. Meanwhile, Gretchen Wilson will serve as the tour manager for all of the contestants. Suffice to say, with three early ‘00s icons, it’s a competition music show that’s already got fans in its grip. The live audiences will have a say in the winner.
“Woohoo! What a team,” one fan commented on Instagram. “So excited to watch this,” someone else wrote. “This will be amazing,” another Instagrammer chimed in.
What Does the Winner of The Road Get?
One performer will go home with more than just bragging rights! And the prize is a big one. Like most singing competition shows, the winner will receive a recording contract—this one is from Country Road Records, a division of 101 Studios, in partnership with Thirty Tigers. Plus, they will get a $250,000 cash prize. Perhaps even better: The act will get a coveted slot on the Mane Stage at Stagecoach Country Music Festival 2026.
Red Bull is upping the ante with additional prizes, including a spot at Red Bull Jukebox. They’re also giving two runners up five recording sessions at Red Bull Studio Los Angeles.
The Road premieres Sunday, October 19, at 9 p.m. ET on CBS.
