Back in 2022, acclaimed producer Rick Rubin had confirmed he was working on a new album with the band, revealing they had completed an “incredible” recording session in Costa Rica.

However, soon after frontman Casablancas gave a somewhat muted response to the news saying that the outfit had “jammed and started some stuff”‘ but a new Strokes record was “extremely far off” from being finished.

Guitarist Albert Hammond Jr also later recalled the “magical” sessions and added: “I don’t think we’ve written our best songs yet,” he said. “I really feel that in my gut”.

In 2023, in an interview with NME the guitarist gave new hope, adding: “We went and did a bunch of recording. It could come out a year or two years from now – it’s an unknown amount of time when it’ll be finished but, yes, we are working on another record.”

If the result of the bands sessions with Rubin have resulted in a new effort, it will mark the band’s seventh studio album and the follow up to Is This It (2001), Room on Fire (2003), First Impressions of Earth (2005), Angles (2011). Comedown Machine (2013) and The New Abnormal (2020).
