The year is off to quite the dramatic start. As many of us try to keep our sanity amid the world’s escalating problems (see U.S. President Donald Trump’s explosive invasion of Venezuela on January 3), it’s easy to turn to the entertainment world for solace—even if that means obsessing over silly gossip and “mom group” drama.
This week, awards season kicked off and our favorite movie stars returned to the red carpet, but the biggest story on everyone’s feeds came from High School Musical alum Ashley Tisdale, who published an op-ed on The Cut blasting her group of famous mom friends as “mean” and “toxic.”
In the first-person essay, titled “Breaking Up With My Toxic Mom Group,” the actor accused the starry group—which seemingly includes Hilary Duff, Mandy Moore, and Meghan Trainor—of excluding her from activities and icing her out, all while she was seeing photos of their meetups all over Instagram.
She wrote, “Here I was sitting alone one night after getting my daughter to bed, thinking, Maybe I’m not cool enough? All of a sudden, I was in high school again, feeling totally lost as to what I was doing ‘wrong’ to be left out.”
After realizing she was still being excluded from “group hangs,” Tisdale said she confronted the other moms in their group chat. She wrote: “This is too high school for me and I don’t want to take part in it anymore.” Her comment, Tisdale said, “It didn’t exactly go over well. Some of the others tried to smooth things over. One sent flowers, then ignored me when I thanked her for them. Another tried to convince me that everyone assumed I’d been invited to gatherings and just hadn’t shown up. Then why didn’t anyone ever ask where I was?, I wondered. To be clear, I have never considered the moms to be bad people. (Maybe one.) But I do think our group dynamic stopped being healthy and positive—for me, anyway.”
Tisdale didn’t name any names (though fans can and have already guessed them), and none of the moms publicly responded to her essay. But one dad did. Duff’s husband, musician Matthew Koma, took to his Instagram Stories on Tuesday to post a mock The Cut cover of himself with a headline that read, “A mom group tell all through a father’s eyes: When You’re the Most Self-Obsessed Tone Deaf Person on Earth, Other Moms Tend to Shift Focus To Their Actual Toddlers.” He added in a sarcastic caption, “Read my new interview with @thecut.”
