A crowd gathered Friday night in Mobile’s Cathedral Square to hear Alexia Jayy, winner of the most recent season of “The Voice,” sing the National Anthem, and to watch as she was honored by Mobile’s mayor.
“I’m ready to go play ball. I’m ready to go fight. Whatever I need to do after that, Ms. Alexia Jayy,” Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis said after her performance of the anthem. “We’re so proud. We’re so proud of you. And we all know you’re from Irvington, and that’s great, but I still hope you tell people you’re from Mobile. Mobile is proud. And we are just so thankful that you’ve been able to share your voice with the world, with a national audience. You’ve been able to share some of that soul of Mobile with the national audience.”
Cheriogotis made Jayy laugh when he gave her the key to the city. “I don’t know what it unlocks, but maybe you can find out and tell me,” he said. “Certainly, if you find yourself in a spot of trouble or get a parking ticket, show them that.”
The city proclamation cited some of Jayy’s career accomplishments and concluded:
“Throughout her journey, Alexia Jayy has remained a proud representative of the Gulf Coast community, demonstrating humility, determination, and a commitment to inspiring others to pursue their dreams regardless of circumstance.
“And whereas her accomplishments serve as a shining example to young people throughout our community that hard work, faith and perseverance can open doors to extraordinary opportunities. Now, therefore, I, Spiro Cheriogotis, 109th mayor of the city of Mobile, do hereby recognize and honor Alexia Jayy for her outstanding achievement in music for representation of the city of Mobile and the state of Alabama on the national stage and her continued impact as an artist and inspiration to others.”
Jayy did not speak at the appearance, which took place during Mobile’s monthly artwalk.
