ComingSoon Senior Editor Brandon Schreur spoke to Hannah Stocking, Madison Pettis, and Yvonne Orji about the new Netflix rom-com The Wrong Paris. The trio discussed getting to play larger-than-life characters, their first reactions to reading the script, and more.

“A young woman (Miranda Cosgrove) joins a dating show thinking it’s in Paris, France, but it’s actually in Paris, Texas,” the synopsis for the movie reads. “She plots a way to get eliminated until her unexpected feelings for the bachelor (Pierson Fodé) complicate her plans.”

The Wrong Paris is now available to stream on Netflix.

Brandon Schreur: Hannah, I want to start with you because I thought you were hilarious in this movie. Especially the part where you bring out the picture to show what your babies would look like together; that got me so bad, I was laughing out loud. You get to be so funny in here. Tell me a little about what your reaction was when you read the script for the first time, and you realized you got to play a character like this?

Hannah Stocking: My first reaction was that she has really fiery red hair, and I was really excited to dye my hair because I’ve never really dyed it a new color. But, then, to also hear that this character is always exuding ovulation. That made me happy to let loose and tap into that kind of lactating energy.

Yvonne Orji: That lactating energy. Hello, Lulu Lemon? Yeah, lactating energy for a new spring line. Yoga pants and lactating energy, yeah, thank you.

Stocking: But I also had a great time, like, every night I would just kind of think of silly one-liners to say. The director was awesome in letting me improv a lot.

Sure, it seemed like a lot of fun. It seemed like everyone was having a lot of fun on this one.

Stocking: Oh, we had a blast.

Madison, I mean this as a compliment, but your character, on the other hand, kind of scared me in here.

Pettis: Thank you so much, Brandon! I’m glad someone noticed!

Orji: She feels so seen right now.

I mean, it’s a good part. She knows what she wants and she’s going to get it. But, like, the part where you’re pulling Miranda’s hair and everything with the mud pit. Like, hoo, yeah.

Pettis: You know, she was giving that energy back. Dawn is like, ‘Oh, I’m so sweet, I’m the main character.’ But she was sassy, too. She starts out in the beginning eating chicken wings. She had a bad vibe, and I picked up on the bad vibes.

How was it getting to play a character like that? Was this a first-time kind of thing for you?

Pettis: You know, it’s not my first time, and I don’t know what people are trying to say about me. I swear, I’m a very nice girl. But playing parts that are not like you is kind of the most fun. Getting to lean into energy that you don’t normally tap into — I consider myself a very nice girl. So the mean girl trope villain is always fun to play. Some of my favorite characters, I was trying to get inspired by Judy Greer in 13 Going on 30. I think she’s a great example of a frenemy who is sort of nice to your face and will then stab you behind your back. She’s sort of a ‘bless your heart’ kind of mean girl, you know? So it was fun walking that line of full b-word and also being on-camera, professional, and trying to win this show. She was a good time.

Totally. Yvonne, you’re fun, too.

Orji: [Laughs] Thanks for my consolation prize! Take down those Christmas lights in the background, Mariah Carey hasn’t started singing!

[Laughs] No, I mean, it’s a really fun and unique role to tap into the headspace of. You’re playing a producer in this movie. Did you have to talk to producers or anything to kind of get it right or anything like that?

Orji: I think what Rachel brings to the [movie] is humanity. As a human, I felt like I could tap into that aspect of bringing out the best of people while still calling out gender bias, sexism, and all this stuff she had to deal with as a producer, while also trying to keep the show on the road. Just being in this industry for almost a decade, I saw enough. I tapped into my arsenal of experience.

Thanks to Hannah Stocking, Madison Pettis, and Yvonne Orji for taking the time to discuss The Wrong Paris.
