In 1983, “Every Breath You Take” was on constant radio rotation, and over four decades later in 2025, The Police’s vaguely menacing masterpiece has just claimed another title. This time, it’s the most-streamed song from the entire 1980s.

According to aggregate Spotify data from Kworb and MyStreamCount, the 1983 hit has over more than 2.9 billion streams. This puts the tune ahead of “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey and a-ha’s “Take On Me” for the top spot. That’s a staggering feat for a track that originally ruled radio during the Reagan era and proof that some songs just have that special staying power.

The lasting appeal of “Every Breath You Take” is a mix of nostalgia and curiosity. What many thought to be a romantic love song at first were later surprised to learn that the song actually had a much darker backstory.

“I think it’s a nasty little song, really rather evil,” lead singer Sting (real name: Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner) said during a sold-out arena tour in the United States in 1983, according to Financial Times. “It’s about jealousy and surveillance and ownership.”

However, years later, in 1991, he admitted that when he wrote “Every Breath You Take,” he didn’t intend for it to be so dark.

“It sounds like a comforting love song,” Sting told Smooth Radio, “I didn’t realize at the time how sinister it is.”

Over the years, Sting has alternated between leaning into that darker interpretation and laughing about how often the track is played at weddings, despite the tiny fact that it might be about obsession rather than devotion.

The song’s subtle menace makes it a natural fit for modern playlists, and it’s been sampled, quoted and covered by everyone from Diddy (“I’ll Be Missing You”) to Taylor Swift, whose 2017 hit “Look What You Made Me Do” drew a few comparisons to Sting’s hypnotic hook.

The frontman has long acknowledged the track’s potential dual meanings, while it’s romantic to some, it’s unsettling to others.

“It’s a staggering figure,” he told The Project in 2023 of its streaming numbers. “Some people think it’s a love song, others think it’s a stalker anthem. That ambiguity is its power.”

That power clearly hasn’t faded. While new pop hits rocket up and vanish from the charts, “Every Breath You Take” just keeps climbing — quietly watching every breath you take, and every move you make, as the decades go by.
