Tim Robinson’s A24 Movie ‘Friendship’ Sets Streaming Debut

A24’s Friendship is about to start streaming, and it’s supposed to be nuts.

After hitting theaters in May, writer-director Andrew DeYoung’s black comedy feature is set for its streaming launch Sept. 5 on HBO Max before debuting on HBO linear the next day. The film, which debuted on digital formats a month after its theatrical release, stars Tim Robinson, Kate Mara, Jack Dylan Grazer and Paul Rudd.

Friendship centers on Robinson as Craig, a socially awkward marketing executive who seeks out a friendship with his neighbor Austin (Rudd), a charming weatherman.

“There’s a new Marvel out that’s supposed to be nuts,” Robinson tells wife Tami (Mara) in a memorable moment from the film. “We should go see that.”

The movie premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival as part of the Midnight Madness roster. Raphael Margules, J.D. Lifshitz, Nick Weidenfeld and Johnny Holland serve as producers.

In his review of Friendship for The Hollywood Reporter, critic Michael Rechtshaffen wrote, “Having successfully built a devoted following as a leading purveyor of cringe comedy with his hit Netflix sketch series, I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson, the show’s rubber-faced star/co-creator ups his game with the innocently titled Friendship, a gleefully discomfiting portrait of male bonding that delivers some of the year’s biggest laughs.”

A24 acquired Friendship after it screened at TIFF, and DeYoung previously told THR that he didn’t specifically write the project with the studio’s sensibility in mind.

“I don’t quite know the A24 sensibility, but of course, I am a huge fan of theirs,” the filmmaker said at the time of the theatrical release. “So I just wrote a movie that would make me and Tim laugh, and I feel like that’s enough to bet on.”
