‘Today’ Fans Support Al Roker Over His Emotional News

Al Roker is opening up about a major family milestone.

In early June, the Today show host got emotional as he revealed his daughter Leila got married to Sylvain Gricourt, back in May. The couple had two weddings—one in France (where they met and also live, per People), and another ceremony in New Jersey, which was documented by Al, Deborah, Leila’s friends, and other family members.

Given how Leila’s wedding happened just a few weeks prior, Al opened up about the experience on Today’s annual Father’s Day celebration with Craig Melvin and Carson Daly. As the group talked about fatherhood and what raising children has meant to them, Al explained that Leila’s wedding felt full circle as someone who raised her and watched her grow up.

“It felt like yesterday that I was with [Leila] in her third-grade class, walking across the Brooklyn Bridge and doing a field day, and boom—here she is, married, on her honeymoon,” he shared in a clip posted on Instagram on June 18. “People kept asking me, ‘Were you crying?’ I think I was so happy, crying never even occurred to me.”

But that’s not all Al shared about celebrating Leila’s wedding. He also noted that seeing Leila be with her family had him thinking of another sentimental moment involving her and Deborah back in the day.

“When I looked at Leila, I literally flashed back to this moment when there’s a picture of Leila and Deborah outside her preschool,” he added. “Deborah’s kind of crouched down, and Leila is wearing this little jumper, and it was like no time had passed.”

As fans heard Al get emotional about embracing a new chapter, they expressed their own feelings and showed support for the anchor.

“Beautiful!! ❤️ They do grow up so quickly!! Congratulations!” one person wrote. “Yes, it goes by too fast. I feel the same way about my children. Congratulations, your daughter looks beautiful 🎉🍾🤩,” another wrote. “Hug ’em tight! They’ll be grown and gone in a blink of an eye,” a different follower added.

Now, for those who didn’t know, Leila and Sylvain dated for seven years before getting engaged in February 2025. And as the couple told Vogue about their road to wedded bliss, Sylvain asked for Leila’s hand in marriage in a way that perfectly suited her father’s personality.

“I found a quiet moment one morning to ask her father, Al, to join me for coffee at a small brasserie in our neighborhood on the Right Bank,” Sylvain explained about the interaction at Christmas in 2024. “Over two espressos, I asked for his blessing, and his warm, immediate response confirmed something I had already felt—that our families had truly come together.”
