Some of Hollywood’s cult classic films are reaching major milestones. Not only will Bon Jovi’s Labyrinth celebrate its 40th anniversary next year, but so will Tom Cruise‘s 1986 hit Top Gun.
According to Variety, Top Gun will celebrate the grand occasion by bringing the movie back to the big screen in theaters. Paramount announced the movie with a return on May 13, 2026, in honor of its original release.
Further details have yet to be announced, whether it will be available across the U.S. or at limited locations. Cruise has also not commented on the blockbuster’s 40th anniversary.
“This film is such a beautiful time capsule of the 80s. This level of iconic and unforgettable may never be replicated again,” said one fan on X about the news.
Another added, “Thanks for sharing. That’s awesome news Top Gun back on the big screen for its 40th anniversary is the perfect excuse to feel the needin IMAX Can’t wait to see Maverick and that iconic poster the way they were meant to be experienced again.”
Directed by Tony Scott, Top Gun was based on an article titled “Top Guns”, written by Ehud Yonay three years before the movie’s release. It was also one of Cruise’s staples, having previously starred inThe Outsiders and Risky Business.
The movie focuses on hotshot Navy pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Cruise) as he’s sent to the elite Fighter Weapons School, known as Top Gun. Alongside his radar intercept officer, Lieutenant Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards), he tries to prove he’s the best of the best.
Against its $15 million budget, Top Gun became a commercial success, making over $357 million at the box office. Critics praised its use of visual effects, soundtrack, and it became the highest-grossing film worldwide in 1986.
Thirty-six years later, Cruise returned to his leading role in a sequel installment, Top Gun: Maverick. Returning to Top Gun, Maverick is tasked with teaching some of the Navy’s elite pilots to survive a covert operation.
The sequel was a bigger commercial success than its predecessor, making over $1.4 billion at the box office against its $170-$177 million budget.
