Tool is in talks about a possible Sphere residency, according to drummer Danny Carey.

In a new interview on Spiral Out Network‘s This Movie Tastes Like Music—recorded during a press event for the film Good Luck Have Fun Don’t Die, which features an original track by Carey, Shepherd Stevenson, Joe Cardamone—Carey discussed the integral role Tool’s iconic visuals play in the band’s live show and offered, “We’re hoping when we release the new record, maybe do a stand at the Sphere, ’cause I think we’re perfect for that.” Confirming that the supposed Sphere plans were more than mere aspirations, he added, “We’ve been talking to those guys.”

Carey went on to suggest the “stand” would likely include several shows. “It’s a very expensive endeavor and it takes a while to get into the black,” he explained. “I think it’s a few shows before you make any money, but it would be we’re cut out for that, definitely.”

As for the timeline, Carey said Tool is aiming to finish the new record for 2027.

Elsewhere in the brief but substantive interview, he also discussed AI music, saying it “should be labeled as such” while submitting AI represents “a valuable tool”—no pun intended, it seems. He also joked that the state of the music industry has made licensing Tool’s music for commercial use increasingly attractive. “Now that they’ve taken away all our record royalties, you got to make a buck somehow,” he quipped, “so our standards have lowered.”
