It’s showtime on the big screen for Bruce Springsteen fans.
“Tramps Like Us,” a documentary exploring the global Springsteen fan community, will have its world premiere at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug 24 at the Pollak Theater in West Long Branch on the campus of Monmouth University.
The showing is sponsored by the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music, and the Spring-Nuts fan group, for which the screening will serve as a capper to their annual Seaside Serenade taking place this weekend in Asbury Park.
“A year and a half ago, I set out to tell the story of Springsteen fans from around the world — a film open to anyone who wanted to participate,” said Barry via email. “The result is a global conversation with 245 fans representing 20 countries, from kids to people in their late 70s. It’s the story of how music empowers, heals, shapes identity, and builds community.
Bruce Springsteen sings to the crowd of fans, backed up by the E Street Band, during the final concert of their series at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on October 9, 2009.
“I want to thank the hundreds of Springsteen fans who trusted me with their stories. You opened your hearts, your homes, and your memories — it’s been the honor of a lifetime to try and do them justice. My hope is that you see yourselves represented in this film.
“If there’s one thing I learned while making Tramps Like Us, it’s that no matter when someone became a fan or where they’re from, they all feel that Springsteen’s songs were written for them. His music transcends culture, age, and station in life.”
Barry, a Pompton Plains native, made the similarly-themed doc about U2 fans called “Dream Out Loud.”
The film, sold out at the Pollack, will be simultaneously streamed on the Spring-Nuts Facebook group, one-time only, during the show on Sunday. Proceeds will benefit the Light of Day Foundation, which raises funds to fight against Parkinson’s and related diseases; TeachRock, the school curriculum aide founded by Steven Van Zandt; and the Springsteen Archives.
The showing coincides with the seventh annual Spring-Nuts Seaside Serenade, which takes place Friday, Aug. 22 to Sunday, Aug. 24. The Serenade’s main event takes place from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park. It’s five hours of Springsteen music and sing-alongs.
A handful of tickets, $125 for the main event and more, are available at eventbrite.com. Proceeds raised from the Serenade will benefit Light of Day and TeachRock.
The Spring-Nuts group is celebrating its 10-year anniversary.
“It’s been a truly amazing, humbling and honestly surreal journey that started just as a hobby and distraction from real life, with a few hundred members and turned into a worldwide group that has made lifelong friendships, has been acknowledged by Bruce and the E-Street Band, and helped so many over the years,” said Spring-Nuts founders Howie and Julie Chaz via email. “It’s going to be a truly special and exciting weekend.”
