Every once in a while, a film comes along that offers non-stop rapid-fire insanity that can only be summarized as pure, distilled, gay-as-hell joy. Lesbian Space Princess is one such film. This instant animated classic from Australian writer/directors Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese is the funniest movie I’ve seen all year and even manages to include some positive, life-affirming messages for its characters and audience. Its JPM (jokes per minute) is shockingly high, with way more hits than misses, and it makes tremendous use of its low-fi art style to create something unique and unforgettable.

Princess Saira, voiced by The Pitt’s Shabana Azeez, is the eponymous “Lesbian Space Princess,” an unorthodox hero on a spectacular adventure. She’s kind of a dweeb, so it’s no surprise that the film begins with her super-cool sci-fi bounty hunter, Kiki, breaking up with her for being too bland and boring. When Kiki gets kidnapped by the Straight While Maliens, Saira goes on an adventure to save her and win her back, and to earn back her own self-esteem, which is intrinsically tied with her value to Kiki.

Does ‘Masters of the Universe’ have mid-credits scenes or post-credits scenes? Here’s the spoiler-free answer.

But Saira is not just from outer space. She’s from Gay Space. On her adventure, she makes new friends, allies, enemies, and comes across a ton of impromptu musical numbers, courtesy of her new travel buddies, Willow. The core cast is small, which gives them plenty of opportunities to show off their personalities. Even the spaceship commandeered by Saira, “Problematic Ship,” voiced by Richard Roxburgh, gets a lovely character arc, being forced to choose between remaining willfully ignorant or becoming an Ally to his unlikely travel partners.

The jokes are as plentiful as they are unpredictable. I don’t want to spoil any of them, but suffice it to say that Lesbian Space Princess offers a delightful deluge of humor, from sight gags and perfectly timed pitter-patter dialogue to absurd deviances and gay inside jokes that are both hilarious and genuinely educational. It’s a film that grabs you by the collar and shakes you until you submit to its singular sensibilities. I suppose it could be a bit too manic for some viewers, but it worked for me. I found myself completely absorbed into its world (or galaxy, I should say) and lamented when it was over. It’s the rare movie that doesn’t just win you over with its characters, but also transports you to its setting and says, “Isn’t it so much better here than on dumb Earth?” Yes it is, Lesbian Space Princess. Way better.

The low-fi visual style is nevertheless expressive and colorful, enabling the humor without compromise and adding an extra dose of kinetic energy, unconstrained by the traditional laws of physics. Another highlight is the film’s musical acumen, with a variety of original songs interwoven with the narrative. These are quasi-diegetic, courtesy of Willow, who finds herself playing a big role in the adventure, and every music video sequence is a spectacle of visual storytelling, humor, and heart. Remember music videos? Good times.

Lesbian Space Princess is a rare gem, a wacky comedy that’s supremely silly but also takes its characters seriously as human beings and not just conduits for humor (but also conduits for humor). It’s funny, heartwarming, and exciting, and easily a standout entry in 2025’s cinematic canon.

TV Squad Final Score: 9/10
