In 1988, artists Marina Abramović and Ulay completed one of the most famous performance artworks in history.
Titled The Lovers, the project involved each artist walking approximately 2,500 kilometers from opposite ends of the Great Wall of China over a period of 90 days.
The original concept was for the couple to meet in the middle and get married. However, after years of delays in obtaining permission from Chinese authorities, their relationship had already ended.
Instead of a wedding, their meeting became a farewell. After finally reaching one another in the middle of the Great Wall, they embraced, said goodbye, and went their separate ways.
The Lovers remains one of the most emotional and memorable performances in contemporary art history.
