NYT Connections Answer for Today, June 5, 2026

Just yesterday, I wrote about how much I wanted to see a feature-length documentary about the making of the Avatar films, spurred on by Zoe Saldaña’s comments during an interview with Beyond Noise. And now, just one day later, we have the announcement of Fire & Water: Making the Avatar Films, a two-part documentary special for Disney Plus.

The trailer for the program shows bits of behind-the-scenes images that, in yesterday’s news story, I specifically mentioned wanting to see, such as Kate Winslet breaking the record for holding her breath underwater while shooting a scene, Sigourney Weaver shooting scenes underwater, and the good old fashioned “suit with dots” acting on a motion capture stage.

The documentary shows clips from the movies and behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with actors from the films including Stephen Lang, Sam Worthington, and Sigourney Weaver. The focus, at least for the trailer, is to showcase just how much of an actor’s performance is necessary to make these movies. While there’s certainly an overwhelming amount of computer-generated imagery, it’s all built around the performances of real actors. Hopefully they don’t overlook the talents of the numerous VFX artists who contribute to the films. Their work is self-evident and almost goes without saying, but it really shouldn’t, considering how Avatar is effectively the seamless marriage of human performance and technology.

Fire & Water: Making the Avatar Films debuts November 6 on Disney Plus.
