Wilmington has been a filming destination for both movie and TV productions over the past decades, some of which have been major hits.
According to the online publication Yardbarker, two popular TV series found some of that success by focusing on romance — and not just any kind of romance, but the complicated and messy sort: love triangles.
Yardbarker recently released a list of TV’s most memorable love triangles, and two Wilmington-shot series made the list.
“A good love triangle makes for really good TV,” the article said.
That certainly could be the case for these two series, which both received widespread acclaim during their respective runs and remain popular today.
The list of love triangles, which is in no particular order, includes 20 examples of the popular trope.
So which Wilmington-shot series made the list?
One Tree Hill
“One Tree Hill” cast members James Lafferty, left, and Bethany Joy Lenz answer a question during the third Return to Tree Hill Convention in 2019.
“One Tree Hill” is one of the most popular TV series filmed in Wilmington.
The series, which centers around teenagers as its main characters, aired from 2003 to 2012 for a total of nine seasons.
The love triangle between characters Brooke Davis, Peyton Sawyer and Lucas Scott was listed by Yardbarker.
“‘One Tree Hill’ has made its way onto many best of TV history lists, and it unsurprisingly had one of the best love triangles of all time, too,” the article said. “Brooke, Peyton, and Lucas had viewers tuning in every single week to see which couple was going to come out intact.”

Dawson’s Creek
“Dawson’s Creek” ended the year that “One Tree Hill” began. The series ran for six seasons from 1998 to 2003.
The series also centers high-schoolers and romance — which seems to be a formula for love triangles.
Yardbarker included the love triangle between characters Joey Potter, Dawson Leery and Pacey Witter in its list.
“Love triangles are almost always good for TV, but when it comes to Dawson’s Creek, the show wouldn’t have survived without one,” the article said. “The love triangle between Joey, Pacey, and Dawson literally saved the series.”
