“Baggage from my ex with a one-sentence breakup text.” That’s the opening line from “Comedy 42,” New York indie duo Um, Jennifer?’s new song “Comedy 42.” That’s good writing, and it’s better when rendered as a jaunty, shambling take on ’60s pop music.
Um, Jennifer? were a Band To Watch last year, when they released their full length debut Um Comma Jennifer Question Mark, and they followed it with the one-off single “Stunning.” “Comedy 42,” their latest, is a droll little number about personal apocalypse. Here’s what Eli Scarpati says about it in the Bandcamp description:
“Comedy 42” is about a time when being asleep felt better than being awake; when no one could possibly know how I felt, least of all, me. In terms of sound, I played “Comedy 42” for my friend, and he said it sounds like The Transgender Beach Boys (so, the Beach Boys) which feels pretty accurate to me. It’s a sunny song about a dark time in my life, and I hope it serves as a reminder that connection (and sometimes medication) is the only way through.
