Universal is Supposedly Working on An Animated Donkey Kong Film

According to reliable news source Daniel Richtman, an animated Donkey Kong film is allegedly in the works. The film is likely intended to capitalize on the popularity of both the Super Mario Bros. Movie and the recently released video game, Donkey Kong Bananza. Either way, with the full support of the Illumination team, there’s no chance this movie will be anything short of a massive success.

Donkey Kong Bananza is an easy and likely candidate for Game of the Year. It uses the same engine and art style as Mario Odyssey, making the game similar to a sequel in many ways. However, the story and core gameplay mechanics prove that Donkey Kong Bananza is still a Donkey Kong game at its core. At the end of the day, Donkey Kong Bananza is just another stop on DK’s never-ending quest for bananas.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is an extremely similar story. While Donkey Kong serves a larger purpose in that film, his presence in the movie could have just been a jumping-off point for the Donkey Kong cinematic franchise. At this point, it appears like Nintendo might be creating its own animated cinematic universe featuring some of its most popular characters.

Based on the care and precision Illumination placed into The Super Mario Bros. Movie, there’s no chance that Donkey Kong won’t receive similar treatment. The new Donkey Kong film will most likely have a new plot, either detailing the future of the central character in the Mario universe or diving further into Donkey Kong’s origins.

Either way, this could be one of the most highly anticipated films of whichever year it is planned for release. Although everything around the movie is solely conjecture, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a massive box office success. It’s incredibly likely that Donkey Kong will either see similar or even greater ratings.
