Vanessa Williams kept her professionalism during her London performance, and instead of responding to being heckled when it happened, she saved it for Instagram
Vanessa Williams refuses to be defined by her recent performance in London, which was rudely disrupted by a politically-driven audience member.
The former Miss America winner, 62, has subtly addressed going viral after footage of her being heckled why she sung America’s National Anthem, the Star-Spangled Banner, at the O2 Arena in London before before the recent Memphis Grizzlies game against the Orlando Magic. On Monday, January 19, the Ugly Betty alum shared a screenshot of a Daily Mail news headline that read: “Anti-Trump heckler screams ‘leave Greenland alone’ during US National anthem at London NBA game,” on her Instagram Stories timeline.
Beneath the screenshot of the Daily Mail headline she posted, Vanessa penned, “Drama,” indicating that the one-word summed up her thoughts about the awkward incident.

While Vanessa was performing the Star-Spangled Banner, one attendee in the venue screamed, “Leave Greenland alone,” expressing disapproval of President Donald Trump, 79, trying to force the country into becoming a U.S. territory.
Even though her performance was disrupted after the heckler’s comment caused the stadium to erupt with applause, the multi-hyphenate entertainer continued to sing.
Once the video that captured Vanessa being disrupted reached X, formerly known as Twitter, netizens appeared to agree with the teaser’s sentiment.
“Anti-American sentiment will only continue to grow. In the near future, Americans may not be able to leave their country without becoming targets of hatred and aggression, because the Trump administration is turning the United States into a promoter of discord, hostility, and instability, making it the worst neighbor in the world,” one penned on X. “Vanessa Williams should thank God she managed to leave without getting a stone thrown at her head!”
A second shared, “that’s rough being cheered for ‘leave Greenland alone’ while the national anthem plays? Definitely not the flex America wants. Trump’s actions are making diplomatic waves, and the optics are really bad.”
A third added: “Brits feel strongly about this. We don’t like bullies,” and someone else predicted, “The US anthem will be the most booed anthem in every international stage from now to eternity.”
A recent IPSOS poll data found that large majority of Americans didn’t condone the Trump’s plans to obtain Greenland. The poll that was released on January 14 showed that only 17% of Americans supported Trump’s desire to take over Greenland, while a whopping 47% disapproved of U.S. efforts to acquire the land. However, 35% of respondents said they were unsure.
Among the numerous responses, a sheer minority, only 4% of respondents, admitted it would be a good idea for the U.S. to use military force to take possession of Greenland from Denmark.
