Viggo Mortensen picks his favorite ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy scene
Viggo Mortensen is known for his iconic role as Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but his favorite scene from the franchise isn’t of his own.
On January 14, the Empire special January issue marked the reunion of Viggo with his former co-star Sean Bean to celebrate 25 years of the beloved franchise.
The star of Peter Jackson’s adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s books reflected on their time on set and revealed some of the series’ most famous scenes, including Boromir’s death in the first movie, first movie of the trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring.
The moving scene not only hasn’t touched the audience but also gripped Viggo for years now.
With the publication, Viggo recalled that behind the scenes, there was some debate about the best way to kill Boromir, causing nervousness among the people.
“There was this whole thing about how they were gonna do all these Orc arrows that Sean was gonna get riddled with,” Viggo revealed. “They were trying to do all these complicated things, kinda old-school but with wires, and Sean finally said, ‘Just stick it in and I’ll pretend it just hit me and I’ll do one after the other.”
He then turned to his co-star Bean and asked, “Didn’t you do it that way?”
“I did,” Bean said. “I told them, ‘Let me just try something when you say, ‘Action.’”
On the director’s cue, Bean flinched as if struck by an arrow.
“And they all went, ‘Wow, that’s amazing!’” he recalled with a laugh.
