James Gunn recently discussed the status of the Viola Davis-led Amanda Waller series and where it stands in the DCU slate. In a new red carpet interview, he shared updates on the show’s development. He acknowledged that it has progressed more slowly than other projects.
James Gunn is excited to see Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, but it’ll be a while
During the Peacemaker Season 2 red carpet premiere, James Gunn shared an update on the Viola Davis-led Waller series. “We’re working on it, but you know some things have moved really fastly and some things not so fast – and that’s been a thing that hasn’t moved so fast. But I can’t wait to see Viola get her Waller outfits on, with her s—– floral dresses and do something special,” Gunn told The Hollywood Reporter.
In February 2024, Gunn confirmed on social media that he moved Waller to follow Peacemaker Season 2 “for a variety of reasons” and added that production would not start without a finished script. He stated, “Quality is the utmost priority.” DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran later told The Hollywood Reporter in February 2025, “We’ve taken a couple of cracks at it but still haven’t been able to land. Waller has been a bumpy road.”
The series, announced in 2023, is a spinoff from The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. It focuses on Amanda Waller, played by Davis, and includes members of Team Peacemaker. Christal Henry and Jeremy Carver serve as co-showrunners, with Henry also writing and executive producing. Gunn and Safran are executive producers.
Production delays in 2023 prompted DC Studios to prioritize Peacemaker Season 2, which pushed back Waller’s original 2024 release plan. In June 2025, Gunn denied rumors that the show was being reworked into a Checkmate-focused ensemble series and called them “B.S.”
When first announcing the project, Gunn called it “a fantastic story that is out of this world,” created by Henry, known for Watchmen, and Carver, creator of Doom Patrol. The studio has not set a release date for Waller.
Peacemaker Season 2 will premiere in August 2025. Viewers can stream The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker Season 1 on Max.
