It’s been nearly five months since Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, went missing. The 84-year-old woman disappeared in the early hours of Feb. 1, 2026, after she was allegedly kidnapped from her Arizona home.
Months have passed without a definitive lead, but on June 26, TMZ reported that authorities may soon identify the main suspect in the case.
According to the outlet, they received another email from an anonymous individual claiming to know the identities of Guthrie’s kidnappers. The sender also insists they possess a video showing the ”main” assailant with Guthrie on the day she died. This latest message reportedly came from the same person who previously demanded one Bitcoin in exchange for information about Guthrie’s disappearance.
“I have a phone stashed in a secure location guaranteeing both the information it stores and the safety of the phone,” the individual wrote, per TMZ. “What it contains is my definition of delivering them on a silver platter, a short video of the main guy with Nancy the day that was probably her last, pictures of both involved, names and addresses and age.”
The mystery sender further claimed that the phone is in a “location easy to access if you know where it is,” and said they would provide the password for one Bitcoin.
They also asserted that there were two kidnappers behind Guthrie’s abduction. In response, TMZ asked the sender to provide a screenshot of Guthrie to verify the claim and later forwarded the email to the FBI.
TMZ’s latest report comes amid revelations that two notes, reportedly sent from the same IP address, were sent to Guthrie’s family and several news outlets just days after she was taken from her home. The first note suggested that Guthrie was “safe but scared,” while the second claimed she had died and her remains were “buried in nature.” The captors also reportedly expressed guilt over her alleged death.
Authorities urge anyone with tips or leads to contact 1-800-CALL-FBI or the Pima County Sheriff’s Office at 520-351-4900.
