Disney’s Andscape has released the first trailer for They Fight, the upcoming drama starring André Holland, Wendell Pierce, and Samira Wiley. Written and directed by Sheldon Candis, the film will make its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival on June 8 before arriving on Hulu and Disney+ on July 17.
Inspired by a true story, They Fight follows Walt Manigan, a reformed ex-con who returns to Southeast Washington, D.C., searching for redemption. Hoping to rebuild his life, he finds himself back at the struggling boxing gym he once left behind. Under the guidance of his former mentor Slim, Walt begins working with a group of young fighters whose challenges extend far beyond the ring.
The newly released trailer introduces viewers to a community fighting for opportunity while navigating the realities of growing up in the nation’s capital. As Walt develops relationships with Quincey, Peanut, and Twin, he discovers his own path forward may be tied to helping them find theirs.
Candis described the film as a tribute to some of the storytelling influences that helped shape his creative voice. “THEY FIGHT is my love letter to one of my all-time favorite directors John G. Avildsen,” he said in a statement. “It’s a Karate Kid-inspired narrative punched in the face with a John Hughes coming-of-age story about Southeast D.C. kids fighting to dream within amateur youth boxing.”
Leading the cast is Holland as Walt Manigan, alongside Pierce, Wiley, Anthony B. Jenkins, Toussaint Francois Battiste, and Mykelti Williamson. The screenplay was written by Candis and Andrew Renzi, who also serves as a producer on the project alongside Jason Michael Berman and Ben Renzo.
