As somebody who loves horror movies and tries to stay up to date on all things horror, I had never heard of a new film called Primate until recently. The film is backed by Paramount Pictures and is directed by Johannes Roberts, the filmmaker behind 47 Meters Down, The Strangers: Prey at Night and Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.
Well, Primate is quickly rising up the ranks of horror movies I’m most excited to see. It’s about a girl who brings home a pet chimp named Ben. The chimp contracts rabies during a pool party, and all the friends need to band together to survive.
On the surface, that sounds like a pretty generic premise, but the word out of Fantastic Fest is that the movie is a great time.
What has me excited is that everybody is praising the practical effects. Without a trailer, we don’t have an idea of what the practical effects look like yet, but people who saw it at Fantastic Fest are ranting and raving.
They’re also praising the film’s willingness to embrace the absurd. That is music to my ears. I don’t need an A24 allegorical horror film that is about the nature of the beast within man. I just want to watch a monkey go crazy on a bunch of teenagers for 90 minutes. Luckily, it sounds like that’s exactly what Primate is.
