Weapons director Zach Cregger says his Resident Evil film will be inspired by Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead II.

The 44-year-old filmmaker has established himself in the horror genre thanks to his new critically acclaimed movie Weapons, which sees Julia Garner and Josh Brolin’s characters investigating the disappearance of a class full of children, and 2022’s Barbarian.

Cregger’s next project is a new Resident Evil movie – which will be the eighth live action film based on Capcom’s survival horror video game series – and he wants it to be a zombie attack romp, using Raimi’s 1987 cult classic sequel as a reference point.

Speaking to Ringer, he said: “It’s gonna be not at all like Barbarian and Weapons. It’s going to be a rock ’em, sock ’em … it’s for me to play. And turn my brain off and just make an … Evil Dead 2 … get crazy with the camera. Austin Abrams is gonna be my guy. It’s a weird, fun, wild story.

“This movie follows a person from point A to point B. It’s like a real time journey, where you just go deeper and deeper into the depths of hell.”

Cregger has assured fans of the games – which pitted numerous Raccoon City cops against the mysterious Umbrella Corporation, an international pharmaceutical company that secretly develops mutagenic viruses – that he will be fully respectful of the lore and cannon of the console titles.

He added: “It’s really a love letter to the games. Because I love those games. This is a story that I would’ve wanted to write whether I got the IP or not. I just happen to be able to have these Resident Evil people be down. So I get to play in that sandbox. I’m doing it because I think this movie is going to be awesome.”

The new Resident Evil film hasn’t started principal photography yet, and little is known about the movie’s plot.

However, it has been reported that the movie – which Cregger co-wrote with Shay Hatten – will follow a struggling courier assigned to deliver a package to a remote hospital.

Along the way, he becomes trapped in the midst of a viral outbreak and must battle his way through swarms of mutated creatures to survive.

Austin Abrams – who collaborated with Cregger on the director’s upcoming horror flick Weapons – is set to star as the main protagonist.

Resident Evil has featured on the big screen since 2002 with the eponymous horror flick, which starred Milla Jovovich as the action heroine Alice.

The film received five sequels, with the last entry in the series, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, coming out in 2016.

In 2021, Resident Evil was rebooted with Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City – which starred Avan Jogia as Leon S. Kennedy and Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield.
