Hunter Doohan recently revealed why Tyler was spared in the Wednesday Season 2 finale and what it means for his future.
In the final episode, Wednesday had the chance to kill Tyler after his mother and uncle manipulated him into undergoing a procedure that sacrificed Pugsley. Instead of killing him, Wednesday struck his restraints with an axe and said, “I missed.” Doohan has talked about this in a recent interview.
Hunter Doohan reveals why Tyler was saved in Wednesday Season 2
Doohan explained to RadioTimes.com that the moment reflected the complex relationship between Wednesday and Tyler. Their connection began as a potential romance before evolving into a rivalry.
He said, “Their dynamic throughout the whole show, and the fact that, when it comes to it, instead of killing him and kind of ending it, all she frees him, they actually help each other out.” Doohan added that Jenna Ortega came up with the improvised final line herself, noting, “She came in with so many great ideas. It was really incredible to watch.”
Tyler’s release came with consequences. As per the show’s lore, Hydes need a master to survive, and with Francoise dead, his survival was uncertain. Doohan noted, “So when we kind of see him at the end, he knows he’s gonna die. He doesn’t have a master. He’s kind of lost all hope. And then it’s this one little glimmer of hope that comes from Capri’s character.”
That hope arrived when Isadora Capri, played by Billie Piper, revealed some Hydes that live without masters. Tyler and Capri’s character set off to locate the group, giving Tyler a possible path forward. While talking about Season 3, Hunter Doohan added, “I want Tyler to find… I mean, I think I’ll always kind of wrestle with the morality and then the Hyde versus Human side of himself, but I think we’ve still yet to see him be in control.”
