Fall is here, and 2025’s crop of shows involves a large amount of crime dramas, as well as some comedies, thrillers, and returning favorites.
Big stars on the small screen this year include Glen Powell, Mark Ruffalo, Ethan Hawke, Jude Law, and Robin Wright.

“Task”
This crime thriller from “Mare of Easttown” creator Brad Ingelsby stars Mark Ruffalo. Set in Philadelphia, the story follows former priest-turned-FBI agent Tom Brandis (Ruffalo), who leads a task force investigating a string of violent robberies. The culprit is Robbie Prendergast (Tom Pelphrey), a family man.
Where to watch: Currently airing Sundays on HBO (9 p.m.) and Max.
“The Girlfriend”
This psychological thriller is based on a bestselling novel of the same name by Michelle Frances. The story follows Laura (Robin Wright), whose perfect life begins falling apart when her son Daniel (Laurie Davidson) brings home a new girlfriend, Cherry (Olivia Cooke, “House of the Dragon”).

“Black Rabbit”
Jude Law and Jason Bateman star as brothers in the thriller set and filmed around New York City that’s “The Bear” meets “Ozark.” The story follows a rising-star restaurateur (Law), who is thrown into the criminal underworld when his ne’er-do-well brother (Bateman) returns to town with a slew of shadowy characters in his wake.
Where to watch: Sept. 18 on Netflix.
“The Lowdown”
Created by Sterlin Harjo (“Reservation Dogs”) and executive produced by and starring Ethan Hawke, this follows citizen journalist Lee Raybon (Hawke), who lives and works in Tulsa, and is constantly wanting to expose corruption, even when it pulls him away from his teenage daughter, Francis (Ryan Kiera Armstrong). “Twin Peaks” star Kyle MacLachlan also stars in the show, playing a politician.
Where to watch: FX on Sept. 23 and Hulu on Sept. 24.
“Chad Powers”
Starring Glen Powell and executive produced by Eli Manning, this comedy follows hotshot college quarterback Russ Holliday (Powell). Eight years after a mistake ruins his career, he tries again by disguising himself under the absurd new identity of “Chad Powers.”
Where to watch: Sept. 30 on Hulu.
“Monster: The Ed Gein Story”
The first two seasons of Ryan Murphy’s series “Monster” were hits. Season 1 starred Evan Peters as Jeffrey Dahmer. He won a Golden Globe for the role, got an Emmy nomination, and it was also Netflix’s second most popular show ever following its Sept. 2022 premiere. Season 2, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” was also a hit. Season 3 stars Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein – a serial killer from the ‘50s whose grisly acts were so horrifying, he inspired a slew of classic horror movie villains, including in “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” “Psycho” and “The Silence of the Lambs.” It’s also a big deal as a rare TV role for Hunnam, who has mostly stuck to movies after “Sons of Anarchy” ended in 2014.

“Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy”
This show is about one of America’s most notorious real life serial killers, who was active from 1972 to 1978 and dressed as a clown to entertain children. The show purports to peel back the “twisted layers” of his life while also diving into his victims’ stories. The chilling drama stars Michael Chernus in the title role, taking a darker turn, as he’s best known as the pretentious goofball Ricken on “Severance.” Gabriel Luna (“The Last of Us”) and James Badge Dale co-star as detectives.
Where to watch: Oct. 16 on Peacock.
“Nobody Wants This”
Season 1 of the rom-com was a hit, scoring over 15 million viewers and reigning as the No. 1 most-watched English language show on Netflix its second week out. It starred Kristen Bell as Joanne, an agnostic podcaster who fell for Noah, a rabbi (Adam Brody, in his biggest comeback since “The O.C.”). Season 2 will add Brody’s real-life wife, “Gossip Girl” alum Leighton Meester.
Where to watch: Oct. 23 on Netflix.
“It: Welcome to Derry”
This prequel to Stephen King’s classic 1986 novel also ties into the “It” movies that came out in 2017 and 2019. Bill Skarsgard, who played the terrifying clown Pennywise in those films, reprises the role in this show. It follows a family who moves to the story’s setting of Derry, Maine, in 1962, when sinister events start happening. Co-stars include Jovan Adepo (“Watchmen”) and “Zola” star Taylour Paige.
Where to watch: HBO at an unannounced date in October.
“Robin Hood”
Sean Bean in a costume drama is practically its own genre — see his iconic past roles in “Game of Thrones” or “The Lord of the Rings.” His latest is a rendition of “Robin Hood,” with co-star Connie Nielsen (“Gladiator”). Bean will play the Sheriff of Nottingham while Nielsen plays Eleanor of Aquitaine. Jack Patten plays the titular role.
Where to watch: MGM+ on Nov. 2.
“Stranger Things”
This show has been filming so long that its child star Millie Bobby Brown is now a mother, and she’s still playing the same role of Eleven. The retro sci-fi hit “Stranger Things” first premiered in 2016 and now, the fifth and final season is nearly here. The gang – including Eleven, Hopper (David Harbour), Joyce (Winona Ryder), Steve (Joe Keery), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Mike (Finn Wolfhard) and more will finally face off against the villain Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). Unfortunately, the season will release in three installments: four episodes on Nov. 26, three episodes on Christmas, and the series finale on New Year’s Eve. But, they’re rumored to be supersized episodes.
