Producer Sidney “Omen” Brown, who has worked with the likes of Beyoncé, Drake and more, has died at the age of 49.
According to NBC News, Brown’s body was discovered in his New York apartment on Saturday by his sister, Nicole Iris Brown, after he didn’t show up for a DJ gig.
“He was holistic and healthy. So, we don’t know of him being sick, so this is all pretty sudden,” Omen’s sister said in a statement. “I hope people will remember that he was willing to help the younger generation.”
“He was always big on helping younger people start their careers and get themselves into the game. It was about just the music, no matter who the artist was,” she added.
“The cause and manner of death are pending further study,” the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner told Variety.
Born in Harlem in 1976, Brown was a producer on early Roc-A-Fella releases by Memphis Bleek and Amil around the turn of the century. He earned production credits on Memphis Bleek’s “Coming of Age” debut as well as Fabolous’ “Street Dreams” album hits “Change You or Change Me” and “Why Wouldn’t I” in 2003.
He also crafted the score for the Roc-A-Fella/Universal Pictures film “Paper Soldiers” from 2002.
Brown later went on to produce the smash hit “Tell It Like It Is” from Ludacris’ Grammy-winning 2006 album, “Release Therapy.”
The hit producer found himself around Young Money when he teamed up with OVO’s Noah “40” Shebib to produce “Shut It Down,” featuring The Dream, on Drake’s “Thank Me Later” debut album in 2010. He collaborated with Shebib again to co-produce Lil Wayne’s hit “I’m Single,” which went to No. 82 on the Billboard Hot 100.
In 2013, Brown co-produced Beyoncé’s “Mine,” featuring Drake, from her self-titled album. The standout song peaked at No. 82 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Over the years, Omen went on to earn more production credits with Mya, Redman and Action Bronson.
“It is with deep shock and sadness we have heard about the passing of our dear friend Omen Sidney Brown,” the restaurant Barawine Harlem, where Brown was scheduled to DJ, posted. “Our thoughts and prayers go to his family, his friends and all who love him.”
