Wham! have resumed their festive dominance with Last Christmas.
In the final week before the official Christmas No.1, the 41-year old single has returned to the summit in the UK on consumption of 42,470 units (Official Charts Company). In reality, it is much higher as chart rules impose ACR on catalogue tracks which require double the amount of streams to register a single unit,
Last Christmas (Epic/RCA) was streamed around 12 million times in the UK alone in the past week. It has now passed five million units for the post-1994 period (5,093,989).
Although it had to wait until 2020 to reach the summit for Wham!, Last Christmas has now racked up 11 non-consecutive weeks at No.1. It is well placed to be the official Christmas No.1 for 2025 – revealed on December 19.
Furthermore, the festival perennial this week reached a new peak of No.2 on the US Hot 100. It has now reached nine times RIAA platinum status.
“All at GME are deeply moved by the love shown for Last Christmas and delighted to see it return to the top spot in the UK for the 11th time, and to see it reach a new all-time high at No.2 on the Hot 100, more than 40 years after its release,” said a statement from George Michael Entertainment. “George adored Christmas, and he would have truly loved seeing Wham! back at No.1 this year. Andrew Ridgeley appeared at an exclusive signing at RCA’s shop at Mare Street Market, King’s Cross, which for one day only was specially designed to match the chalet seen in the iconic music video.
Last Christmas peaked at No.1 in 16 countries upon its release and is officially the fourth highest-selling single of all time in the UK.
