Here’s what Weapons reveals about Archer’s dream sequence, the chilling imagery, and the mystery director Zach Cregger chose not to explain.

Weapons movie’s floating gun in the sky scene explained

In Weapons, the floating gun appears during a dream sequence experienced by Archer Graff (Josh Brolin). He is a grieving father whose son, Matthew, is among 17 children who vanished from their homes at 2:17 AM.

In the scene, Archer follows a trail left by his son. He looks up at the night sky and sees a massive gun suspended in the clouds, with “2:17” carved into its side like an alarm clock display. This surreal image is one of the film’s most striking moments and has prompted multiple interpretations from viewers.

Some audience members see the floating gun as a metaphor for the ongoing threat of school violence in America, hovering like an unavoidable storm over parents. Others believe it symbolizes Archer’s cycle of aggression and reliance on violence as a coping mechanism. The engraved time suggests the permanence of these tendencies.

Another theory proposes that the gun reflects Archer’s realization that the missing children have been “weaponized” by an unknown force. This possibility pushes him deeper into his investigation.

Director Zach Cregger has stated there is no definitive meaning to the image. Speaking to Variety, he explained, “It’s a very important moment for me in this movie, and to be frank with you, I think what I love about it so much is that I don’t understand it… I don’t have the right answer… I just like that it’s there.” He noted that viewers are free to interpret the scene in their own way, whether they view it as political, symbolic, or simply visually striking.

Cregger’s choice to leave the scene unexplained, like David Lynch’s approach, keeps it ambiguous and open to interpretation. The floating gun remains a powerful symbol, sparking theories without a definitive explanation.
