What If You Only Watched The Highest-Rated Episode Of Every Show? Well I’ve Made That List For You

Person lying on a couch, holding a TV remote, with a bored expression while watching television

There’s a special kind of pain in starting a new show. You’ve got eight seasons ahead of you, everyone online swears it’s “life-changing,” and you’re just sitting there wondering which episode is actually worth your time. Because let’s be real, not every show hits gold every time.

So I did what any responsible TV addict would do: I went to IMDb, the holy grail of ratings, and found the single highest-rated episode from every major show. Think of this as your shortcut to the good stuff, no filler, no “it gets better after Season 3,” just the episodes that made people collectively lose their minds.

1. Breaking Bad — “Ozymandias” (2013)

A person sits alone on a barren roadside, gazing into the distance under a cloudy sky
Sony Pictures Television, Gran Via Productions, and High Bridge Productions / Via imdb.com

IMDb Rating: 10/10 (265K votes)

There’s no debate here, this is the episode that broke everyone’s spirit (in the best way possible). Walt’s empire finally crumbles, alliances implode, and it all goes down in a desert so silent you can almost hear the sound of Emmy trophies clinking in the distance. It’s 47 minutes of television perfection and yes, IMDb agrees.

2. Game of Thrones — “The Rains of Castamere” (2013)

Period drama scene with a man in medieval attire standing in a dimly lit banquet hall. Candles and guests create an intense atmosphere

IMDb Rating: 9.9/10 (135K votes)

You can’t talk about Game of Thrones without talking about that wedding. Robb and Catelyn Stark walk into a hall full of Freys, and by the end, no one’s breathing (including half the audience). It’s one of those episodes that made me genuinely question if my Wi-Fi glitched or if HBO just emotionally mugged me.

3. Succession — “Connor’s Wedding” (2023)

Three individuals in formal attire embrace warmly
Gary Sanchez Productions, Hyperobject Industries, and Project Zeus / Via imdb.com

IMDb Rating: 9.9/10 (41K votes)

No one saw this one coming, not even me, not even the internet. What starts off as another episode of awkward rich-people banter turns into one of the most gut-punching hours of television ever made. “Connor’s Wedding” reminded viewers (and me) that Succession could make tragedy feel almost too real, and it did it mid-party.

4. BoJack Horseman — “The View from Halfway Down” (2020)

Animated horse character in a jacket and shirt, talking on a phone with a full moon in the background
Tornante Company and ShadowMachine / Via imdb.com

IMDb Rating: 9.9/10 (28K votes)

Even if you knew BoJack Horseman could get dark, nothing prepares you for this one.  As BoJack comes face-to-face with the people he’s lost, the show quietly turns into a conversation about regret, mortality, and second chances. It’s heavy, it’s beautiful, and it’s proof that animation can hit harder than most dramas ever do.

5. Vinland Saga — “End of the Prologue” (2019)

Anime character wearing a crown with long hair, looking serious. A red mark is on their face. The background features geometric patterns

IMDb Rating: 9.9/10 (27K votes)

The tension is practically unbearable in this one. As the Imperial Council proceeds, Askeladd learns shocking news about Wales, and the moment he’s called by the king, he’s forced to make a last stand that’s as strategic as it is emotional. It’s a masterclass in suspense in which every word feels loaded with weight. By the end, I was left holding my breath, marveling at how much storytelling they packed into just 24 minutes.

6. Chernobyl — “Vichnaya Pamyat” (2019)

Four serious-looking men, including one in a military uniform, sit at a table with microphones, seeming to address an audience or conference

IMDb Rating: 9.8/10 (68K votes)

Nothing could have prepared me for this finale. Valery, Boris, and Ulana push through fear, bureaucracy, and danger just to make the world see the truth. The tension is palpable, but it’s the quiet glances that linger long after the reactor’s smoke clears. It’s devastating, but impossible to look away.

7. Dexter — “The Getaway” (2009)

A man kneels in a bathroom, holding a baby. The floor is wet and they appear distressed, possibly part of a dramatic scene
Showtime Networks Presents, John Goldwyn Productions, The Colleton Company, and Clyde Phillips Productions / Via imdb.com

IMDb Rating: 9.8/10 (31K votes)

Okay, seriously, this episode had me sweating. Dexter and Arthur are on a collision course, Debra’s uncovering secrets like she’s on a personal vendetta, and Rita finally calls out Dexter on their messy marriage. By the end, I was sitting there, heart racing, thinking: How is this show this good? If you’ve ever wanted a Dexter episode that makes you feel like you’re right there in the blood-spattered drama, this is it.

8. Doctor Who — “Blink” (2007)

Five angel statues surround a crouching person, creating a dramatic scene. The statues have wings and appear in dynamic poses

IMDb Rating: 9.8/10 (27K votes)

If you’ve ever wanted a Doctor Who episode that genuinely gives you chills, this is it. Carey Mulligan’s Sally Sparrow is thrown into a puzzle you can’t put down, while the Weeping Angels silently wreck everything you thought you knew about time travel. I swear, I kept checking behind me. It’s clever, it’s scary, and it’s one of those episodes that makes you want to rewatch immediately, because the first time, you’re too busy gasping to catch all the details.

9. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia — “Charlie Work” (2015)

A man stands indoors wearing a graphic t-shirt and a casual military-style jacket, looking surprised

IMDb Rating: 9.8/10 (12K votes)

If you thought Charlie was just the weird guy in the back, this episode proves he’s a chaotic genius. Watching him juggle an impossible health inspection while the rest of the gang spirals into nonsense is pure comedy gold. I laughed, I gasped, I literally held my breath at one point, all for a health inspection. Only It’s Always Sunny could make sanitation feel this thrilling.

10. Attack on Titan — “Hero” (2019)

Two animated characters in action pose with intense expressions, holding equipment. Background shows blurred buildings, suggesting motion

IMDb Rating: 9.8/10 (152K votes)

Okay, if you’ve ever doubted anime can make your heart stop, watch this one. Erwin’s charge? Absolute legend. Armin’s plan? Genius-level, nerve-wracking stuff. I was literally yelling at the screen, gripping my chair, and still couldn’t tear my eyes away. It’s emotional, it’s intense, and it’s the kind of episode that makes you feel like you just ran a marathon… emotionally. Hero lives up to its name in every single second.

11. Community — “Modern Warfare” (2010)

A person in a white tank top leaps while holding a toy tiger at what looks like a community center
Krasnoff/Foster Entertainment / Via imdb.com

IMDb Rating: 9.8/10 (16K votes)

Greendale goes full-on battle royale, and every second is packed with clever gags, paintball stunts, and those little character moments that make you grin. Jeff and Britta’s romantic tension sneaks in perfectly, and Ken Jeong is, as always, unforgettable. I kept laughing out loud while also marveling at how tight and inventive everything was. Twenty minutes never felt so thrilling.

12. Gravity Falls — “Not What He Seems” (2015)

Animated character wearing a fez and suit looks serious in front of a conspiracy board with various notes and images pinned on it
Disney Television Animation / Via imdb.com

IMDb Rating: 9.8/10 (9.3K votes)

Secrets come to light and loyalties are tested as Dipper and Mabel face unexpected truths about Grunkle Stan. Every scene is layered with clever twists, humor, and subtle hints that make the reveals hit even harder. This episode turns a seemingly simple custody situation into a game of wits and trust, leaving the stakes higher than ever before in Gravity Falls.

13. Avatar: The Last Airbender — “Sozin’s Comet, Part 3: Into the Inferno” (2008)

Animated character with a scar uses fire and blue flames in a dynamic action pose. Dark background enhances the dramatic effect
Nickelodeon Animation Studio / Via imdb.com

IMDb Rating: 9.8/10 (13K votes)

The finale ramps up every conflict to its peak. Zuko and Azula’s showdown is intense and emotional, while Aang faces Ozai under the unstoppable force of Sozin’s Comet. The episode balances breathtaking action with character resolutions, giving each hero and villain a moment that feels earned. It’s dramatic, the kind of ending that makes the entire series feel like a triumph.

14. Better Call Saul — “Bagman” (2020)

A man stands outdoors wearing a striped tie and a shirt with stains, with rocky landscape in the background

IMDb Rating: 9.7/10 (33K votes)

A “simple errand” has never felt this intense. Jimmy is in over his head, Mike is quietly keeping things from spiraling out of control, and Lalo… well, Lalo shows up just when things couldn’t get more tense. Every second clicks into place, from heart-pounding suspense to darkly funny moments. Bagman proves that Better Call Saul can make a walk to the desert feel like the most nerve-racking adventure ever.

15. The Office — “Stress Relief” (2009)

Reveille Productions, Deedle-Dee Productions, and Universal Media Studios / Via imdb.com

IMDb Rating: 9.7/10 (19K votes)

This episode is peak The Office. Dwight’s fire drill spirals into pure madness, Stanley ends up in the hospital, and Michael tries to “fix” everything with an awkward roast. But the scene that has everyone (and me) screaming and laughing, clutching their stomachs? Creed slapping Meredith and running off like it’s the most natural thing in the world. It’s absurd, ridiculous, and perfectly The Office.
