Notable shows

The dystopian world of Gilead gets a coming-of-age story in “The Testaments” (Hulu, April 8), a spinoff from “The Handmaid’s Tale” starring Chase Infiniti and Lucy Halliday with Ann Dowd returning as Aunt Lydia.

Elizabeth Banks plays a woman who is shrunk to the size of a Barbie doll in “The Miniature Wife” (Peacock, April 9). Matthew Macfadyen co-stars in the satirical dramedy, based on the short story by Manuel Gonzales.

Dan Levy stars with Taylor Ortega as clumsy siblings who get tangled up in organized crime and fail upward into increasingly bigger schemes in the comedy “Big Mistakes” (Netflix, April 9) created by Levy and Rachel Sennot.

The four-episode revival series “Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair” (Hulu and Disney+, April 10) reunites original cast members Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, Jane Kaczmarek and others.

“The Audacity” (AMC+, April 12), a darkly comic series set in the bubble of power and privilege in Silicon Valley created by Emmy-winning writer/producer Jonathan Glatzer, features Billy Magnussen, Sarah Goldberg and Zach Galifianakis in its ensemble cast.

The family comedy “Margo’s Got Money Troubles” (Apple TV, April 15) stars Elle Fanning as a single mom who drops out of college to raise her baby and Michelle Pfeiffer and Nick Offerman as her parents.

Aubrey Plaza co-creates and stars in “Kevin” (Prime Video, April 20), an adult animated comedy about a house cat (voiced by Jason Schwartzman) who decides to try a life without people. It also features Whoopi Goldberg, John Waters and Amy Sedaris.

Horror and comedy mingle in “Widow’s Bay” (Apple TV, April 29), starring Matthew Rhys as the mayor of a quaint island town off the coast of New England that is rumored to be cursed. Just as he reignites the failing tourist trade, the old legends start to repeat themselves.

The Spanish-language eight-episode limited series “House of the Spirits” (Prime Video, April 29), adapted from the acclaimed novel by Isabel Allende, follows three generations of women in a conservative South American country during a period of upheaval.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is the former Special Forces soldier hired to protect the young witness (Billie Boullet) to a crime in “Man on Fire” (Netflix, April 30), based on the novels of A.J. Quinnell.

Anticipated movies

Two college roommates (Gaten Matarazzo and Sean Giambrone) go on a wild ride when a simple food run is hijacked by a mind-bending experimental drug in the comedy “Pizza Movie” (Hulu, April 3).

Keanu Reeves plays a Hollywood star who goes searching for a blackmailer with a video that could destroy his career in “Outcome” (Apple TV, April 10), a dark comedy from director and co-star Jonah Hill.

Survivors of a Category 5 hurricane on the Australian coast face an unexpected threat — hungry sharks swept in by the storm — in the survival thriller “Thrash” (Netflix, April 10), starring Phoebe Dynevor and Djimon Hounsou.

Mark Wahlberg and Paul Walter Hauser are condom reps who land in a scandal involving the soccer World Cup in the raunchy comedy “Balls Up” (Prime Video, April 15) from director Peter Farrelly.

Charlize Theron is a woman alone in the Australian wilds battling a deadly predator in “Apex” (Netflix, April 24), a survival thriller from director Baltasar Kormakur. Taron Egerton and Eric Bana co-star.

Timothée Chalamet is “Marty Supreme” (HBO Max, April 24) in the Oscar-nominated drama about a table tennis master in 1950s New York City.

Also arriving from theaters are:

  • “Is This Thing On?” (Hulu, now streaming) with Will Arnett and Laura Dern.
  • Horror sequel “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” (Peacock, April 3) with Josh Hutcherson.
  • Oscar-nominated “Sirāt” (Hulu, April 6) from Spain.
  • “The Plague” (AMC+ and Sundance Now, April 10), a thriller set at an adolescent sports camp with Joel Edgerton.
  • The darkly satirical “No Other Choice” (Hulu, April 24) from South Korea and director Park Chan-wook.
  • Cannes winner “Sound of Falling” (MUBI, April 24) from Germany.
  • “Good Boy” (Hulu, April 25), a horror film from the perspective of a dog.

Netflix

“Stranger Things: Tales from ’85” (April 23) is the animated spinoff to the hit supernatural series from the Duffer brothers. A new voice cast takes over the characters.

HBO Max

“Hacks” (April 9) returns for a fifth and final season.

Hulu

Two friends (Alfie Allen and Shazad Latif) get tangled up in uranium smuggling in North Africa in the British thriller “Atomic” (April 1).

Prime Video

The fifth and final season of “The Boys” (April 8) wraps the dystopian superhero series.

Disney+

“Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord” (April 6) is the latest animated series in the “Star Wars” universe.

Other services

“A Taste for Murder” (BritBox, April 7), a limited series British murder mystery set in Capri, Italy, stars Warren Brown and Phyllis Logan.

The limited series “Dangerous Truth” (Viaplay, April 9) is a German political thriller wound around a conspiracy that reaches back to the 2003 Iraq War.
