Kate Middleton Shares How Her Cancer Affected Her Family

Naomi Watts earned her star power as an actress, but over the past few years, she’s earned her, ahem, stripes, as a beauty and wellness brand founder with the launch of menopause-focused Stripes Beauty and become something of a menopause advocate, even publishing a book, Dare I Say It: Everything I Wish I’d Known About Menopause. In the midst of it all—including starring in the show All’s Fair, renewed for a second season (of the megawatt cast, she says, “we all really love each other”) and filming a new “family drama” with Sarah Paulson—she keeps it simple in her everyday life, especially when it comes to beauty.

“I certainly wouldn’t have predicted that this [is] where I’d be in life, running a company,” Naomi tells Good Housekeeping. “When I was told I was going into early menopause, I was filled with panic and shame—it was a lonely, scary time and I wished there were more resources.” She then resolved to become a resource: “It took a long time for me to understand my symptoms and skin being the biggest one—it is reactive, it’s sensitive, it’s dry, it’s itchy, it’s burning, and all of the skincare I was using was no longer working and actually aggravating it,” Naomi says.

After a “deep dive,” she discovered it was all related to the loss of estrogen and hydration that comes with menopause. “I was looking for something that’s really speaking to me, where I am at this moment, not promising the world, and I need the community and education that goes with navigating this,” Naomi explains. When she couldn’t find that, she created it and Stripes Beauty was born.

Starting with skincare (of course), we chatted with Naomi about all of the must-haves she can’t live without from home to the red carpet, including the minimalist makeup she carries in her bag, the pan she cooks with, and the perfect white T-shirt her friend created. Listen in…

When dreaming up this body butter, “we wanted luxurious hydration but also firming, so it’s filled with a blend of nine peptides plus hyper moisturizers like shea and cocoa butters, squalane, and ectoin,” Naomi says. “We really packed it [with ingredients]—we got pushback from our development team at certain stages because we couldn’t put anything else in it.”

Electrolyte Drink Mix

You add this electrolyte powder to water and “it’s so good first thing in the morning,” Naomi says. “It feels like you’re getting a lot of glasses of water in one.”

The Full Monty Post Shower Body Oil

“The body oil is a game-changer: We normally see vitamin C just for face, but we wanted the body to have the same kind of care as the skin does,” Naomi explains. “The other day, the weather was cold and my skin was dry and crepey so I paired this with the body butter—the cream first, then the oil as a finishing step for that amazing glow.” She adds that “it absorbs so fast, I can put it on just before I slip on a silk dress and zoom out the door for the red carpet.”

Always Pan 2.0

“I cook a lot, at least three nights a week, and this is my favorite pan,” Naomi says. “It’s ceramic, cleans so easily, and doesn’t get sticky—I’ve gone through quite a few of them over the years.”

Brow Pop Dual-Action Defining Pencil

“I’m obsessed with keeping my eyebrows looking clean and Kosas does a great eyebrow pencil that I love and works really well for me,” Naomi says.

Anthelios Melt-in Milk Body & Face Sunscreen Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 100

Naomi also calls sunscreen one of her go-to products. “With sunscreen, I want to make sure I am getting full coverage,” she says. “We love La Roche-Posay—it’s a great brand I use for the face and body.”

The La-Roche Posay SPF above is one of the GH Beauty Lab’s best-tested sunscreens for not leaving white residue on skin or being sticky or greasy.

Nerida Hearth 5-Wick Scented Candle

“I love a candle, but some of them are just too strong and overpowering for me,” Naomi says. She is a fan of the candles from Michelle Pfeiffer’s fragrance brand Henry Rose, though: “Her fragrances are gorgeous but gentle.”

Sensibio H2O Micellar Water Makeup Remover

“My eyes get so sensitive as I’ve entered into midlife and beyond, so I am really reluctant to use anything too heavy or oil-based,” Naomi explains. “I use this micellar water anytime I remove eye makeup because it’s gentle.”

The formula is also a GH Beauty Award winner: It removed 99% of makeup in just three swipes in Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab evaluations and was suitable for sensitive and easily irritated skin.

K.I.S.S.I.N.G Lipstick

“When I’m not working, I love to give my makeup a rest—the most I’ll use is a little lip balm or a lip color,” Naomi says. “For on the go, I like to have a few lipsticks I can repurpose for cheeks—I use [makeup artist] Charlotte Tilbury’s.”

The Iconically Soft Perfect Tee in White

“I’m a jeans and T-shirt girl and my friend’s brand Sold Out does a great one,” Naomi raves. “They are really nice cotton and just the right fit—sometimes T-shirts are either too long or too short, but this hits in the exact right spot so you don’t have to tuck it in or worry that your belly’s going to come out.”

Lit Up Highlight Stick

“I’m not someone who’s really good at putting on my makeup,” Naomi admits. “So I like a stick—anything that requires no tools. [Makeup artist] Gucci Westman’s highlighter is amazing.”
