Spider-Man has been one of Hollywood’s most dependable superheroes ever since Tobey Maguire first swung onto the big screen in 2002.
After decades of failed attempts to bring Marvel’s web-slinger to theaters, Maguire’s trilogy finally cracked the formula. The films were packed with memorable moments — the upside-down kiss, Willem Dafoe’s chilling Green Goblin, that infamous dance — and helped to kick off the comic book movie boom of the 2000s.
The franchise was reinvented in 2012, when Andrew Garfield stepped into the suit for two Amazing Spider-Man movies. Another fresh start followed in 2016, when Tom Holland took over the role and brought the superhero into a fast-growing Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Spider-Man later made the leap into animation, with 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse further expanding the character’s world and becoming the first film in the series to win an Oscar.
His story isn’t over yet. With Holland returning as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which hits theaters on July 31, it’s the perfect time to revisit every Spider-Man movie and settle one of superhero fandom’s biggest debates: Which one is the best?
Every Spider-Man movie, ranked
Everyone has a favorite Spider-Man blockbuster, but agreeing on the definitive ranking is another matter. We compared every solo Spider-Man movie using a mix of IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic scores to see which one comes out on top.
The list includes only movies in which Spider-Man is the lead character, so the Avengers movies and Sony’s Spider-Man Universe spin-offs are excluded.
Into the Spider-Verse claimed the crown, followed by its 2023 sequel, Across the Spider-Verse. The top-ranked live-action movie was Spider-Man 2, while The Amazing Spider-Man 2 landed at the bottom of the table.
Each site’s ratings system is different. IMDb user ratings are measured on a scale of 1 to 10, while Rotten Tomatoes shows the percentage of positive reviews from approved critics. Metacritic calculates a weighted average of selected critics’ scores out of 100.
Scores were current at the time of publication and may change as additional ratings and reviews are submitted.
