What’s your favorite scary movie?
The filmmakers of “The Dead of Night” share with the Caller-Times what their favorite horror film is.
- The Texas city of Corpus Christi was recently mentioned in the Paramount+ series “Landman.”
- Corpus Christi has been referenced in numerous television shows, including “Boy Meets World” and “King of the Hill.”
- References range from character backstories to jokes about the city’s reputation.
In a recent episode of “Landman” on Paramount+, Corpus Christi was mentioned.
In the fifth episode of season two, Cooper drove to the Sparkling City by the Sea to ask Ariana’s parents for their daughter’s hand in marriage.
This isn’t the first time Corpus Christi has been mentioned on television.
Here are eight other times the city has been the topic of conversation, and where to watch.
‘Boy Meets World’
In the season six premiere, Maitland Ward joins the main cast of “Boy Meets World” as Rachel McGuire. As Eric and Jack start to wonder where they will find a new roommate, in walks Rachel, leaving her boyfriend’s apartment right down the hall.
Storming out, she yells at him, “I give up a scholarship to Yale to move to Philadelphia with you, and you tell me you’re going to Corpus Christi to find yourself?!”
Where to watch: The series is available to stream on Disney+.
‘The Cleveland Show’
In season one’s “Cleveland’s Angels” of “The Cleveland Show,” Cleveland gambles away Roberta’s college fund. When Kendra discovers that Cleveland was cheated out of his money, she recruits Donna and Arianna for a heist mission.
In a voiceover, Cleveland explains that Kendra is portraying a high-roller from Corpus Christi. When gambling, the dealer tells a heavyset Kendra that she is “kinda thin” to be from Corpus Christi, as the episode premiered in 2010 and the city had recently been named the fattest city in America by Men’s Health magazine.
Where to watch: The series is available to stream on Hulu.
‘Community’
In the 10th episode of season one’s “Community,” the study group decides to go out to a bar to celebrate Troy’s 21st birthday. But when they realize Annie is underage, Britta gives her a fake ID.
The name on the fake ID is Caroline Decker of Corpus Christi. Paranoid about being caught, Annie memorizes the card and puts on a Southern accent.
Where to watch: The series is available to stream on Hulu, Peacock and Tubi.
‘King of the Hill’
With “King of the Hill” taking place in Texas, Corpus Christi is mentioned in several episodes, such as season three’s “Hank’s Cowboy Movie” and season five’s “Yankee Hankee.”
In season 12’s “Four Wave Intersection,” Dale mentions that Boomhauer used to be the “best surfer” in Corpus Christi, calling him “a golden god on a wooden board.”
Where to watch: The series is available to stream on Hulu.
‘Route 66’
In season three’s “Somehow It Gets to Be Tomorrow,” Tod befriends a 13-year-old boy and inadvertently worsens the teen’s troubled relationship with his foster parents.
The episode opens with Tod driving over the old Harbor Bridge, and sharp-eyed viewers could point out the Corpus Christi Cathedral, the H-E-B Tennis Center and the old Nueces County Courthouse.
Where to watch: The series is available to stream on Tubi.
‘Saturday Night Live’
Hardcore fans of “Saturday Night Live” may know of the Bill Brasky sketch, where businessmen smoke cigars, down Scotch and reminisce about the unseen man-beast of a salesman.
In season 21, Alec Baldwin hosted episode 11 and was part of the inaugural skit. One of the stories the businessmen tell about Brasky involves a trip to Corpus Christi and an 8-foot Asian waiter.
Where to watch: The series is available to stream on Peacock.
‘Selena: The Series’
When Netflix announced it was creating a show about Selena, Corpus Christi knew the city would be featured. But some areas in town depicted in the series did not quite match the reality of Corpus Christi.
For example, Selena grew up in the Molina neighborhood, but the area shown in the series looked different than the Corpus Christi borough. Additionally, the Corpus Christi beaches depicted looked like those found in California, Florida or Mexico.
Where to watch: The series is available to stream on Netflix.
‘Southland’
In season four’s finale of “Southland,” Ben is tracking down a sex worker named Claudette to help protect her daughter from an abusive man controlling their lives.
Ben purchases a bus ticket for Renee, Claudette’s daughter, to send her back to her hometown of Corpus Christi and away from the dangerous lifestyle in Los Angeles.
Where to watch: The series is not available to stream, but episodes and seasons can be rented on Apple TV and Prime Video.
