The “new era” of Survivor has been filled with its fair share of “disaster tribes.” But Survivor 49 has perhaps taken the cake with the ill-fated Kele. The blue tribe has been down in the dumps after losing every single challenge, something that was further exacerbated when they lost their leader in an unprecedented medevac. And, while it led to continued losses for the tribe, it also culminated in the most interesting vote of the season so far.

Check out spoilers about tonight’s episode below and find out who was voted out.

Jake Latimer

Jake Latimer had family weighing on his mind on Day 6 of Survivor 49. After all, he was missing the birth of his child to come out and play, wanting his dad to see him on the beach before he lost his eyesight for good. Unfortunately, what his dad would end up seeing of his time in the game is equal parts tragic and unfortunate. It was not the snakey gameplay from the competition that took Jake out, but a literal snake itself. He got bitten by a banded sea krait, a highly venomous snake that required immediate medical attention. And, while it seemed like luckily no venom got into his system, the Survivor doctors deemed the conditions too unsafe to put Jake back into the game. Luckily, there was a bit of a silver lining to his sudden departure, as he got to return just in time for his child’s arrival after all.

Jeremiah Ing

Jeremiah Ing told nearly everyone in his life that he was climbing Mount Everest as a cover story for going on Survivor. But he had no idea the metaphoric mountain climb that was coming his way in Fiji. Jeremiah’s usually-chipper personality withstood a barrage of negativity, as his tribe underwent loss after loss. Going to his third Tribal Council in a row, he was relatively confident, as he and Sophi Balerdi had hatched a plan to blindside Alex Moore with an idol in his pocket. Unfortunately, it was not written in the stars for the astrology lover to continue in the game. Not only did Alex play his idol but, fearing she would get idoled out of the game, Sophi turned on her number one ally, making him the final person culled from Kele before the swap.

Were any advantages found or played on Survivor 49 tonight?

Yes! Feeling the heat, Alex chose to play his recently-acquired idol at Tribal Council, nullfying one vote against him. Meanwhile, not facing the vote anytime soon, both the Hina and Uli tribes went on group idol hunts, both hoping to use the Beware Advantages to their advantage. On Uli, Rizo Velovic got his hand on the prize, announcing to the tribe his intention to use it for all of them. Meanwhile, Michelle “MC” Chukwujekwu was less public about her find, only choosing to share the information with her closest ally Steven Ramm.

What happened to Jake on Survivor tonight?

Episode 3 of Survivor 49 featured a never-before-seen medical emergency. Sitting by the water, Jake alerted his tribe that he had been bitten on the bottom of the foot by a snake. Upon consulting the off-screen guide of Fijian flora and fauna, it was confirmed that the snake in question was a black-banded sea krait, a highly venomous creature. The Survivor production crew snapped into action, immediately evacuating Jake from camp and bringing him to the medical center at base camp.

What unfolded was perhaps the biggest look behind the curtain we’ve ever seen on the show. Jake was treated by the medical staff, who revealed that he had suffered from a “dry bite,” which luckily had no venom. However, as communicated to host Jeff Probst, given the deprivational aspects of Survivor, as well as the psychological trauma he endured, the doctors could not clear him to return to the game. And so Jake was informed that he would officially be removed for his health. A card in the middle of the episode showed that not only did Jake make a full recovery from his bite, but he was able to make it home to witness the birth of his child.
