Michael Waldron recently addressed questions about Chad Powers’ first season, offering insight into the creative decisions that shaped its format. Speaking in a Reddit AMA, the writer and showrunner reflected on how the six-episode structure came together during development, emphasizing that the approach was intentional and aligned with the overall vision for the series.

Responding to a question about Chad Powers’ episode count, Michael Waldron said, “Short season was partly due to everyone’s busy schedules, partly due to me just liking short orders. We did 6 with LOKI too and I liked how it forces you to not tread water with any episodes, and really accelerate your story.” Waldron added that he enjoys fast-paced storytelling, referencing Eastbound & Down’s six-episode first season as inspiration.
In a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Waldron confirmed that the six-episode structure was always part of the plan. “It stopped where I would have wanted to stop it,” he said, noting that the show couldn’t sustain a long run since the main character’s football eligibility would eventually expire. He explained that six episodes “felt like an event” and allowed for a tighter, more focused narrative.
The showrunner further clarified that Glen Powell’s filming schedule contributed to the decision, but was not the only reason. Waldron said, “When you’ve got Glen Powell on television, it makes you accelerate your storytelling… You never tread water.” He revealed that major plot points, like Coach Ricky discovering Chad’s secret, were intentionally brought forward to maintain momentum.
During the AMA, Waldron also confirmed plans for potential future seasons, stating, “Three seasons is our ideal number. Take the Catfish through this full football season.” Elsewhere, he compared Chad Powers’ structure to Breaking Bad, hinting that future chapters could explore darker turns as the protagonist’s success invites greater threats.
