Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos were shaken up by their latest TV project.
The Live With Kelly and Mark hosts serve as executive producers of the new Hulu docuseries Squatters: Get the F*** Out of My House. The six-part series, which premiered on Thursday, June 4, follows different stories from across the country where squatters became an unwanted problem for homeowners.
“I’m very much, if something is unjust, it enrages me,” Ripa told People in an interview with People published on Thursday. “I was shaking through half of these stories, just like shaking from rage.”
Consuelos, for his part, said he “would be in so much trouble if this happened to me,” adding, “All the things I thought about doing are against the law. That’s people’s initial instinct — like, ‘No, no, no, this is easy. Just get them out of your house.’ It’s not easy.”
The show documents the ups and downs of removing squatters and how they exploit legal loopholes to stay put and take advantage of homeowners. Ripa was first inspired to dive into the topic after reading a Vanity Fair article about a squatting case in Malibu during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I said, ‘This is something. We have to make this into something. This is wild,” she stated. Speaking of a case featured on the show, in which a homeowner was arrested for trying to enter her property, Ripa said, “She did all the right things, and she got arrested.”

Consuelos added, “I feel the worst for them because it wasn’t like they were trying to lease out the house. They’re selling the house. And next thing you know, the locks are changed on their house.”
According to Consuelos, he and Ripa are “just scratching the surface” of squatter issues on the show’s debut season. “I think it’s not just state to state, it’s community to community.”
Ripa told the outlet, “It’s the audacity of the criminals, but it’s also their utterly destructive nature. They don’t just squat in your home, profit from squatting in your home, subleasing it to whoever wants to come and go. They are then destroying the property value of your home by taking all of the appliances out of your home. The fixtures, the beautiful chandeliers, ripping the wood out of the floor, selling off anything. They destroy everything.”
Just as he and Ripa got emotional working on the series, Consuelos said the show will leave viewers’ jaws on the floor. “You can’t believe that they actually got away with this or getting away with this until you watch the resolution of the episode, which is pretty fun,” he stated.
The couple celebrated the show’s release on Thursday’s episode of Live. “If you are looking to rent a place, if you’re looking to get a roommate in your house, you want to see this docuseries because it is very important to get everything upfront, in writing,” she told viewers. “Once you get a squatter in your house, it’s very hard to get them out.”
