Viewers are curious to know why The Waterfront was canceled by Netflix after Season 1. Created by Kevin Williamson, the crime series centers around the lives of the Buckleys. They once had a great fishing business in North Carolina, which began to fall apart with time. Now, they also struggle to continue their tradition. With Season 1 having concluded in June 2025, the latest reports claim that the series won’t return. Here’s why.
Why did The Waterfront get canceled by Netflix?
Netflix has ended The Waterfront after one season, with Deadline noting the streamer felt the show didn’t have enough viewership and completion rate to move forward with a renewal.
The news about The Waterfront’s cancellation broke out two months after its release in June. Typically, any streaming service takes viewership, audience reception, and costs into consideration before greenlighting new seasons. In this case, the series received mixed reviews but did well in terms of performance on the platform. It remained in Netflix’s Top 10 English-language series for five weeks.
Despite drawing a good amount of viewership, sources revealed to Deadline that the show wasn’t eligible for a renewal. This is because Netflix felt that the viewership and the completion rate weren’t “high enough” to proceed with another season, although the rate was good. For context, a completion rate is a metric that determines who all started and ended the show successfully. Since the show’s completion rate was reportedly not good, it suggests that while many viewers started watching, a large number didn’t finish it, which brought the rate down.
Showrunner Williamson recently took to his Instagram Stories to react to The Waterfront’s cancellation news. He wrote, “A big thank you to everyone who watched The Waterfront. While I’m sad the Buckleys won’t be back for Season 2, I’m celebrating the joy that was Season 1. I had the pleasure of working with a dream cast and crew. My heart is full of gratitude for all the people who brought their talents to the show both in NC and LA. You were all amazing.” He expressed gratitude to Netflix for giving him the chance to bring the story to life and also described its production as “one of the best experiences of my life.” (via Entertainment Weekly)
