Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo performed two new Stephen Schwartz compositions for Wicked: For Good during NBC special

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo treated audiences to an exclusive preview of new music from Wicked: For Good during NBC’s special broadcast One Wonderful Night. The November 6 television event featured the stars performing both beloved Broadway favorites and two previously unheard songs written specifically for the upcoming sequel film.

The special showcase included Erivo performing the emotional ballad No Place Like Home and Grande delivering The Girl in the Bubble, both composed by Grammy and Oscar-winning songwriter Stephen Schwartz for the second installment of the movie musical adaptation. These new compositions expand the Wicked musical universe beyond the original Broadway soundtrack.

New songs explore character development

Erivo’s No Place Like Home presents a bittersweet exploration of Elphaba’s complex relationship with Oz, despite experiencing discrimination and cruelty in her homeland. The Wizard of Oz-inspired lyrics allow the character to articulate her deep connection to a place that has often been unwelcoming to her differences.

Grande’s ballad The Girl in the Bubble occurs later in the sequel’s narrative, showcasing Glinda’s internal struggle as she grapples with her privilege and divided loyalties between her friendship with Elphaba and her responsibilities to Oz’s citizens. The song reflects Glinda’s growing awareness of her position and power within the political landscape.

Both compositions demonstrate Schwartz’s continued ability to create music that advances character development while maintaining the emotional depth that made the original Wicked Broadway production so compelling to audiences worldwide.

Star-studded performances highlight special

The One Wonderful Night broadcast brought together the complete Wicked film cast, including Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, and Marissa Bode, for a comprehensive celebration of the musical franchise. The event took place at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre, featuring an elaborate Emerald City-inspired set design.

A 37-piece live orchestra under the direction of Stephen Oremus provided musical accompaniment for reimagined arrangements of the beloved Wicked soundtrack. The large-scale production created an immersive experience that transported viewers into the magical world of Oz.

The special also featured original Broadway stars Kristen Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, who joined Erivo and Grande for a special rendition of For Good performed from the Gershwin Theater. This multi-generational collaboration highlighted the enduring legacy of the Wicked musical across different cast interpretations.

Commercial success drives sequel anticipation

The original Wicked film, released in November 2024, achieved remarkable commercial and critical success that has heightened expectations for its sequel. The movie earned ten Academy Award nominations, ultimately winning Oscars for Costume Design and Production Design, while both Grande and Erivo received acting nominations.

Since its theatrical release, Wicked has grossed $750 million worldwide, establishing itself as the highest-grossing stage-to-screen adaptation in cinema history. This unprecedented success has created significant anticipation for Wicked: For Good and its continuation of the beloved story.

The sequel will explore the aftermath of Dorothy’s arrival in Oz and follow the witches’ journey as they attempt to change their destinies. Director Jon M. Chu returns to helm the second installment, maintaining continuity with the visual style and storytelling approach established in the first film.

Television special balances promotion and artistry

While One Wonderful Night served clear promotional purposes for the upcoming sequel, the special succeeded in creating genuine entertainment value through high-quality musical performances and behind-the-scenes content. The production values matched those of major awards shows, treating the Wicked material with appropriate reverence.

The broadcast included interviews, behind-the-scenes moments, and sneak peeks that provided insight into the creative process behind both films. This comprehensive approach satisfied both casual viewers and dedicated Wicked enthusiasts seeking deeper engagement with the franchise.

The special will be available for streaming on Peacock, extending its reach beyond the initial broadcast audience and providing ongoing promotional value as the sequel’s November 21 release date approaches.

Wicked: For Good represents the conclusion of the two-part film adaptation, promising to resolve character arcs and storylines established in the first installment while introducing new musical elements that expand the Wicked universe for both longtime fans and newcomers to the franchise.
