Will Arnett, Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes couldn’t stand talking to one “very famous” comedian for more than ten minutes without kicking him out of the SmartLess studio, but all we know about this unnamed nuisance is that he probably isn’t Bill Cosby.
Is there anything more annoying in the world of celebrity trash-talk than when an A-lister tells a juicy story about another anonymous A-lister acting like a nightmare, but won’t even give us a hint about the hidden identity? Look, we get it, celebrities have no incentive to side with TMZ over one of their own, but, really, what’s the point of even bothering to tell a behind-the-scenes horror story if we’re not allowed to visualize the villain?
For that reason, we almost think that Arnett was trolling us when he went on The Romesh Ranganathan Show late last month and reported that he and his podcasting partners had to cut a SmartLess episode short because their superstar comedian guest turned out to be a “f—ing rank a–hole,” only revealing the a–hole’s name to Ranganathan himself after the cameras stopped rolling.
Don’t Miss
Naturally, Arnett’s scandalously vague comments set off a wave of speculation among comedy fans who have a bone to pick with Arnett’s decision to keep the offender’s name a secret, as well as his description of the culprit – after all, is Bill Maher even “very famous” anymore?
News of this mystery guest who didn’t last ten minutes on SmartLess spread across entertainment media this week, earning headlines in PEOPLE, Entertainment Weekly and E! News among other outlets. Naturally, none of those gossip rags are willing to go out on a limb and suggest some candidates for the subject of the story, but comedy fans aren’t quite as coy when it comes to burning bridges with superstar comedians and their publicists.
“Chevy Chase I’m guessing?” one comedy fan surmised in a Reddit thread about Arnett’s story, a popular guess across various comment sections. The timeline would certainly line up, as Chase would have been on a begrudging publicity tour for the release of the documentary I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not shortly before Arnett’s appearance on The Romesh Ranganathan Show.
Another user wrote, “Jerry Seinfeld is my guess. He’s the sort of person with no interest in being likable.” Seinfeld would certainly fit the bill of being “very famous,” but the Bee Movie star and co-writer has already been on a full episode of SmartLess, making a decidedly tame appearance on the podcast back in 2021.
“One of the Rogan orbiters – maybe the fat guy who always does shows shitfaced with his shirt off?” one comedy fan suggested, referencing the barely-clothed Bert Kreischer, whom even followers of the Roganverse often find obnoxious and unbearable.
One name that kept popping up in the Reddit thread and in the comment sections of the various news outlets reporting on the story was Maher’s, whose behavior on his own podcast, Club Random, certainly fits the bill for rank a-holery. However, once again, Maher is a SmartLess veteran, lasting a full 52 minutes on the show back in 2022.
Until we can wear down Arnett enough with our rampant speculation about the world’s worst SmartLess guest, we’ll have a hard time getting to the bottom of this mystery without more clues beyond “very famous” and “rank a-hole” – so, we might as well throw some dark horse candidates into the mix.
After all, it’s easy to imagine that being in a room with Bateman would be enough to turn Conan O’Brien into a living nightmare.
