The May 25 event will include a parade, memorial service, patriotic music and refreshments
The Winesburg Memorial Day observance will be held May 25.
The day will begin with the annual parade, which will start at 9:15 a.m. at the Winesburg water tower. Area veterans are urged to participate in the morning activities. Children are invited to ride bicycles or walk in the parade, and other units also are invited to participate.
Those wanting to be part of the parade should gather at the water tower at 9 a.m. The parade will proceed through town to Westlawn Cemetery, where the memorial service will be held.
State Rep. Beth Lear will be the speaker at the memorial service. Lear is a veteran of the Ohio Air National Guard. She is married to a veteran from the same unit, Ohio’s 121st Air Refueling Wing. She also is the daughter of a Korean War veteran, granddaughter of a World War I veteran who received the Purple Heart and mother of a U.S. Navy sailor.
Lear graduated from Olentangy High School and received her bachelor’s degree in international relations from The Ohio State University. She has been married to her husband, Jeff, for more than 30 years, and they reside in Galena, Ohio. Beth and Jeff have two adult children.
Also participating in the Winesburg services will be several young people, who will give the Gettysburg Address and provide patriotic music. The Hiland band will play several selections, and the roll call of deceased area veterans will be read.
A social time with refreshments will be held at the fire station following the memorial service. The public is welcome.
