The last time I wrote about Wise Up* and their latest release, Diente x Diente, I’m pretty sure I mentioned that you should keep your eyes peeled for new material from them. Well, promises are meant to be kept, right?
Recorded by my good friend Fabián Cerdas, who also worked on the band’s previous video for “Ríos de Desprecio,” Wise Up* have returned with a new music video for “Ya Todos Saben,” a track from Diente x Diente. The track features guest vocals from none other than Taylor Young of Twitching Tongues, God’s Hate, and Disgrace.
What stands out to me is the fact that the band assembled some of Costa Rica’s best creative talent to bring the video to life. That’s not something you see every day in hardcore, and some might even call it a lost art. While many hardcore videos rely on performance footage alone—which is totally fine considering that’s what this music is all about—Wise Up* decided to put their own spin on things by racing through Costa Rican backroads in the bed of an old pickup truck. I don’t even want to know how many hats and sunglasses were lost during filming.
“‘Ya Todos Saben’ is born out of the simple idea of staying true to yourself,” vocalist Eddy Gamboa explains. “There’s a golden rule in our scene: If you’ve got something to say, say it to someone’s face. Speaking ill of someone behind their back, making up stories, or playing a two-faced game is something that has always been frowned upon by us. The song is precisely about those people who talk behind your back but never have the guts to maintain eye contact when facing someone.”
When asked about the video’s concept, Gamboa says it was a collaborative effort from the start. “It was a collective construction,” he says. “The pickup truck idea was born during a band meeting, and everything fell into place when our friend Piña, who always supports us, got us an ’81 Toyota and the means to transport it.”
For producer Fabián Cerdas, one of the most rewarding aspects of working with Wise Up* is the band’s willingness to push beyond typical hardcore visual tropes. “What I enjoy most about working with Wise Up* is the fact that they always bring fresh ideas to the table,” Cerdas says. “Their visual language is different from what is usually seen in hardcore, and we’re often working in environments where we don’t have control over what could happen. That always adds a layer of improvisation and authenticity to the final result.”

To close out our brief conversation, Gamboa summed up the band’s vision for the video.
“All in all, the video reflects exactly what we’re trying to communicate: unity, loyalty, commitment to our beliefs, and the energy that defines Wise Up*.”
It’s safe to say the Ticos continue to surprise us. Keep an eye out for more from Wise Up* in the near future.
Pura vida!
