Woody Allen has opened up about his marriage to his “much younger” wife, Soon-Yi Previn, whom he wed in 1997.
The 89-year-old filmmaker first encountered his spouse while he was romantically involved with her mother, Mia Farrow.
During promotional interviews for his latest book, What’s with Baum?, the director shared extensive thoughts about Soon-Yi, 54. He praised her as a “wonderful mother” with a “larger-than-life personality” and called her “the social and cultural driver in the marriage”.
Allen also admitted he never anticipated being “married to a girl much younger than me”.
“If anyone had told me years ago that I would be married to a girl much younger than me with no background in New York or any similar interests growing up, and that she’d be a Korean orphan, I would have said, ‘No chance. I’m going to be married to a New York actress,” Woody said in an interview. “But it didn’t work out that way.”
Woody and Mia expanded their family by adopting two children, Dylan and Moses, and having another child together, Ronan.
In 1991, Mia discovered an affair between her partner and her daughter. Shortly after, allegations surfaced that Woody had sexually abused his adoptive daughter, Dylan, a claim he vehemently denies.
The longstanding accusations, reiterated by both Mia and Dylan, were scrutinized in the HBO documentary Allen v Farrow.
The explosive content includes a previously unseen 1992 home video filmed by Mia, now 76, in which a seven-year-old Dylan alleges that Allen “touched her private parts”.
Both Woody and Soon-Yi condemned the documentary, stating, “These documentarians had no interest in the truth. Instead, they spent years surreptitiously collaborating with the Farrows and their enablers to put together a hatchet job riddled with falsehoods.
“As has been known for decades, these allegations are categorically false. Multiple agencies investigated and found that, whatever Dylan may have been led to believe, absolutely no abuse had ever taken place.”
They further claimed they were given “only days” to respond to the series, but producer Amy Herdy maintained she made attempts to reach out. “I reached out a few times to try and interview him and got crickets [silence] back.”
Dylan’s highly publicized allegations have not led to any criminal charges against Woody, who has accused Mia of “relentlessly coaching” their daughter into believing he is a “dangerous sexual predator”. Woody also asserts that Mia’s actions are fueled by anger over his relationship with Soon-Yi.
